The $27,900 disappointment? Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 8 issues.
I owned WATTS back in 1986 and through until Series 4. And then Puppies when they came out in 1988. I'm not sure what is "wrong" about them sonically, if one has heard them - and owned them - at length. What's the "nightmare" aspect of the speake...
The Best Isolation/ Vibration Footers per component - what's your experience?
I have Critical Mass Center Stage 2m footers, but before that: Nordost titanium, and then Sort Kones, IsoPlat, Stillpoints (Ultra Mini Risers and Ultra 5) and Goldmund Cones. The Center Stage is dazzling, killing off as it does, the vibration insi...
Time of Day for best Sound
Back in the 1980s, there was much discussion about how music sounded better at night - and why in the pages of Stereophile and TAS. Well, the "why" of it is that fewer people are using their electricity as the evening moves on, so the draw on the ...
Origin Live Silver Mk4 tonearm install issues
I have an origin Live Silver, and an Encounter MK3C. They should drop in easily, but I suspect the nut on the base is too loose on yours. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten it.
Question about high current amps versus "not high current amps"
@dishman442  I agree that listening is the way to go. It's served me well in the past 40 years of evaluating equipment.
Nordost Frey 2; what should I expect?
@4425 Perhaps the people saying "bright" and "thin" were listening to a pair that weren’t fully broken in. Or, they didn’t know the system and they automatically blamed it on the Nordost. This happens a lot; people blaming   the new component wh...
What contributes most to a change in how an amplifier sounds?
An amplifier's "sound" is only apparent when connected to cables and a speaker. So it could depend on the capacitance of the speaker cable, or any steep phase angles the speaker has. And, as mentioned, the power supply, which is why  the average ...
"Cleaning" Vinyl Makes It Worse Not Better!
@mylogic When you get to a certain level of turntable, you’re not going to get a lid that attaches to the turntable. Lids induce vibration. I couldn’t imagine playing a record WITH the lid on. I once had THE best turntable in the world: The Vers...
Tom Evans Phono Preamp Repair
@yakbob Tom will continue selling mainly to Brits and Europeans, who know him better than American audiophiles, especially those "audiophiles" who’ve only been into audio since 2001. Tom’s been around twice that. So, that side of the pond, from ...
All in One amp up to $7k
Aesthetix Mimas integrated. Hybrid. Dual mono tube preamp, solid state amp. 180 watts. 360w into 4 ohms.
What exactly is PRaT???
If one knows how to dance, one knows pace, rhythm and timing. In dance, it’s where you put your foot down on the beat. Not so much in ballet but very much present in African-Jazz or pure jazz dance. It’s not a complex concept. Been around for ages...
Audio Cables: All the Same?
@mclinnguy thank you for an intelligent, considerate, response. I am sure that you are correct and that you can hear cable changes, even with pop music. I can hear them too, with all kinds of music, but well-recorded classical and jazz have more...
Audio Cables: All the Same?
@jmeyers I agree with you completely. I no longer pay any attention to the you-must-be-crazy-to-think-you-hear-differences-in-audio-cable crowd. BUT, I suspect that there are three factors that figure into this: The biggest one is: 1) They hav...
Nordost Heimdall 2 or Tyr 2 digital cables
@akg_ca  I have to input my experience regarding Valhalla and Tyr. As someone who has Tyr 2, and Valhalla 1, I find the Tyr 2 to be quite good, and quite a jump over the Frey 2, which I had for many years. And not nearly as "thin-sounding" as Va...
Need Opinions for Different Cable Manufacturers/Cable Designs
Well, I have Shunyata, Nordost and Transparent cables. Of those, the Shunyata has the lowest noise floor (so that I can hear the subway moving underneath the concert hall on The Nutracker Suite (Mercury Living Presence). All the cables reproduce t...
