Perfect Path Tecnologies ‘The Gate’
My experience with the Bryston BIT 20 isolation transformer (no Gate) is that it smeared the sound and was slow sounding until I replaced the stock power cord with a high end cord.  Bryston engineers informed me that their cord was specially desig...
Persona 9h vs S3 mk 2
Hi Audiotroy, based on your selling the Paradigm 9H and having heard the Vimberg Tonda, about the same price, how are they different and similar?  I would never own a Magico or Wilson, just because of the power consumption as well as I don't want ...
Let's roll: what pre-amp tubes should I consider next?
For an EAR 864 pre-amp, Mullard 4004 (not the sweet and syrupy 12AX7).  Also, large D getter Sylvania.  For 12AU7, I prefer the clear top RCA.  As to 6SN7, I'm using late 40s Raytheon, although Ken-Rad and RCA sounded excellent as well (including ...
Theoretical question about how CD's work
Yes, I experimented with 40 or 50 CD players prior to 2006, trying to find one that approximated LP playback.  I hated CD reproduction until the 2000s.  The players got better as did the DACs.
Theoretical question about how CD's work
Geoffkait   generic, thin, bass shy, brittle, honky, synthetic, congealed sound.  That maybe your definition of CD reproduction, but it isn't mine or half a dozen close friends of mine.  While we all appreciate the sound of a good LP, the average...
Buy a pair of ten year old $40,000 speakers for $4,000 or new ones at that price point?
I had a local speaker repairman restore my bottom foam surround woofers of my Legacy Signature IIIs with rubber surrounds.  Strange that the other two woofers and my Focuses all used rubber surrounds in great shape after 30 years.
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
The Jazz Bakery isn't an ideal sounding venue.  I've frequented it half a dozen times.  Bob Wilber played there a decade ago and his sax and clarinet sounded peaky and bright, actually aggressive sounding, so unlike his playing style.  Locally, ma...
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
My 70 watt Class A EAR 890 has 8 itty bitty storage capacitors while my 130 watt Class A/B monoblocks have huge 3" X 7" pair of storage capacitors each. The McIntosh MC30 sounds like it is 3X or 4X more powerful than it’s rated. My voltage regulat...
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
Well, I have had some quite powerful small Class A/B amps which deliver 2-3X their rated power. Not only that, but they are about 3X to 5X as powerful on a wattage rated basis as many solid state amps. The earliest amps to sound super dynamic is th...
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
Wasn't the XA25 the amp with superlative technical reviews?  Thanks for the info.
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
Excuse me, but what is an F5 amp?  I can't find it in this thread.          I found excessive global negative feedback is also not my preference.  I like the VAC Class A/B amps with 6 db of same.
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
That's where you are 100% incorrect.  That Dynaco is NOT a typical unit. It has been modified to have superior control of deep bass.  My friend Robert Pincus and Audiogon poster Oregonpapa know how powerful my little Dynaco amp is.  It is not as r...
What are the advantages to a Class A amp & what are the trade offs?
jspohn - I own an EAR 890 70w Class A zero feedback amp.  It does not have sufficient power for my Legacy Focus speakers which has a tough impedance and 6-12" woofers.  My highly modified Dynaco ST 70 with 30w Class A/B kills it on the focuses (tr...
Buy a pair of ten year old $40,000 speakers for $4,000 or new ones at that price point?
My 25+ year old Legacy Focus speakers are still being made, with higher quality parts, for $13,000 while used older pairs go for $2-3,000.   However, the older units sound better.   Same with the Legacy Signature IIIs, selling for $1-2,000 (foam ...
Most useful tweaks that are sensible and really make a noticeable improvement
I've been using Herbie's tube dampers for several decades on 12AX7, 12AU7, 6SN7 and 6DJ8s.  They have no negative effect on the sound and the sound is better with them on.  I have also used a pair of tight rubber/silicone rings from Sandy Gross fr...
