Sat front row at the symphony...
@viber6 For 20 years I had various stats.  My favorite was the Acoustat 2+2.  My last was an ML Monolith III.  My new wife (1st died) hated them for their beaminess, lack of dynamic contrast, inadequate bass and overall brightness (replaced by Leg...

Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
"Bottom line: If you look at only the material cost and direct labor part of a $133k pair of speakers, you will find the speakers over priced." This is a problem I and others have had with what we consider trolls on Audiogon. They quote the cost ...
Sat front row at the symphony...
@viper6 Yes, I’ve heard live music in NYC subways throughout the 2000s’ to 2018, the last time I visited. LA is blasting classical music to deter homeless people from gathering at metro stations The Los Angeles Metro is using classical music on i...
Sat front row at the symphony...
@viber6 Well, I partially agree with you. Had you sat in Royce Hall/UCLA back in the 60’s to 80’s prior to the big remodel, you would NOT have appreciated the brighter/thinner sound in the first row versus the 10th. It was direct alright, but did ...
What is the proper loudness for listening?
@mapman That’s certainly true. I have a higher end system in a medium size superb listening room. I prefer listening in the 80s db range with 100db maximum peaks, depending on music. No distortion problems. I can also enjoy music at low levels and...
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
My primary concern in purchasing high end equipment/speakers is that the company goes out of business and no repairs can be made.  Especially with expensive equipment.
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
@yogiboy Actually, bears will poop anywhere, not just in the woods.  So, yes, overpriced equipment abounds.   More so with tweaks and cables where the cost to sales ratio can be phenomenally large.   The Orion speaker was costly to design and ma...
What record cleaner is the most bang for the buck??
@markcasazza 30 minutes?   That appears excessive.  I limit my deep cleaning to 5 minutes.  As to stylus wear, I had a Benz Ruby3 last over 2000 hours.  No problem with tracking/highs, etc. but it definitely lost dynamics at the end.  So, clean re...
What record cleaner is the most bang for the buck??
I purchased my first quality cleaner, the VPI 16 (now upgraded) in 1982. I played with various solutions over the years. I chose a Kirmuss ultrasonic using just distilled water. No filters, easy drainage, reliable. It works but for the need to dry...

@viber6 and @terraplane8bob  I am an amateur choral singer and recording engineer who has done both at venues such as Disney Hall, Soroya (CSUN) and Royce Hall (UCLA).  I was also a classical music reviewer at UCLA (1970s).  I have over 48.500 LPs...
Grimm MU1 Streamer - Really "The Best"?
@nyev  I don't have specialty breakers but as you, everything is connected on one 20 amp breaker with 3 more available throughout the room if I need.  Without the SR blue fuse in the EAR 864, I would dump it.  80% of my CDs sounded adequate to med...
Grimm MU1 Streamer - Really "The Best"?
@nyev  Yes, in my prior home where night and day differences were quite obvious and distressing, the installation of Synergistic Research power outlets and fuses diminished the problem.  It could be that providing superior equipment power is the k...
What is the VERY BEST CD album you've ever heard?
With 11,000 CDs and a very diverse music library/music genre that is too difficult to choose.  I have many more great sounding (mostly uncompressed) CDs versus my 28,500 LPs to choose from (LPs can suffer from compression, vinyl problems, subgener...
Grimm MU1 Streamer - Really "The Best"?
I agree and also purchased the same Torus isolation transformer from Bryston Bit-20.  However, as my system evolved and became better the day/night conundrum dissipated.  Biggest change in a decade has been SR fuses, now with a mix of blue and pur...
