Koetsu Urushi Cartridges - Differences?
The older Koetsu done by Sugano Sr., the old man, used Alnico magnet, and the new ones use either Platinum or Neodymium magnet. My personal preference is the Alnico magnet.
Akiva vs. Lyre Helicon or Titan
The Linto is actually on the mellow side, but the non-adjustable loading and that I've tried even 'better' (i.e. Koetsu Onyx) sounds rather awkward with Linto compared even to Arkiv, I would say that Linn phono and cartridge are made for each othe...
What is up with the 90-X verses the Titan?
The rosewood used in Urushi is aged and harder (dryer). Could be the same as Pro IV (Rosewood Platinum). Also, Urushi has tighter spec'd coils and magnets. If it is just the body, can't fully explain the improvements in refinement, extension, and s...
Bias on Koetsus
Must be something wrong with your Koetsu sample. All Koetsu cantilever is absolutely straight from factory, and they do require proper anti-skating.I have experienced that after setting anti-skate that was 0.2g too low, the cantilever was slanted,...
Here we go again: $5000 budget, which HT speakers?
Check this out. Interestingly, I find ATC works very well with high-end receivers, however, more power is always better.
Clayton M100 Monoblocks??
You may consider the S-40, which should be more than enough to power any bookshelf.I used to own the M100, to this date, I ranked it high on my top amp list. As I upgraded to ATC active 50's, I could no longer use the Clayton. Prior to Clayton, I ...
Active Speakers
The latest and new Active 20 is going to be special. It has the new tweeter as in the 2002 upgraded Active 50's (Seas Excel tweeter with silver coil), plus the SL woofer. Hence a big improvement over 10's and the passive SCM20. At $5500, it is not...
Mat Material...............
Hard platter upon stylus exerting pressure, which is modulated by the groove, becomes microvibration that hits the hard platter surface, and bounces back. The 'microscopic chatter' will add a haze of noise to the music, and also affects all the 'a...
et tu Koetsu?
The Urushi Platinum will be my next Koetsu cartridge. The UP and some other models, such as the one with all-diamond cantilever is not available in US or Japanese retail market, but through people that knows Sugano, they can be obtained. In anothe...
et tu Koetsu?
Quite likely that the phono stage could not handle the 0.2mv output from the Platinum. Having owned more than half a dozen Koetsu:1) Important to load at 100 ohm.2) Black is the 'classic Koetsu' sound, a bit slow, rich. Bass is big, high-end is no...
Anyone heard/compared these carts?
CMK,What's the tonearm and phono stage you plan to use? Koetsu is never lacking in 'audiophile' quality, but what it can bring, further, is a 'magical' musicality so hard to duplicate by other cartridges. I have the 'other cartridge' set up, but i...
Best Portable CD Player
I had recently brought all the potential candidates, unfortunately, the ailing CD3400 turns out to be the best sounding, followed by the Panasonic (couple different models have same innards, my sample was 870 - splash proof version of 570).The hyp...
Help tame my Ekos
Check:1) Out of phase cartridge connection2) Check torque on all screws and bolt. About finger-tight for cartridge, hand tight for VTA locking bolt and arm base bolt (8.5-9.5 lb/in torque)Ideally, the Ekos works well with mid to low compliance MC ...
Stylus cleaning: tools, fluids, techniques?
The polymer based cleaners do not have to be petroleum based (nylon socks are petroleum based, but probably didn't affect human health). There are many other non-petroleum checmicals. However, most of the liquid cleaners are solvent based. Solvent...
VPI 10.5 vs Graham 2.2
It is not appropriate to claim 'best gimball bearing arm'...etc, unless one heard them all, plus the fact that tonearm is part of the equation between cartridge, mechanical setup, turntable, a lot of variants in the equation. The OL arm may be OK, ...
