Cheap crimp connection vs. Solder
No one should use a cheap crimp. However, there are good crimp attachments and tools and they are far better than solder for speakers. I say this as a speaker builder who also has 2 lbs. of Cardas solder under his workbench. I save the solder fo...
Do You Unplug Equipment During Thunderstorms?
A little off topic, but here’s a fun site if you like to look at the end results of electricity doing bad things.   https://www.electrical-forensics.com/SurgeSuppressors/SurgeSuppressors.html
Purifi Class D: Junk?

Did I just cook my preamp?
as it turns out as others have pointed out, no ground pin was removed and the amp is by design ungrounded. I agree it’s dangerous. Could you elaborate on what an outlet tester would tell me? A basic one would tell you if you if the wiring to t...
Do You Unplug Equipment During Thunderstorms?
It may help to preface this by saying I live in South Carolina near the ocean and we have severe storms roll through here yearly.   For this and other reasons I'm paranoid about lightning protection.  Yes, I turn off my power conditioners and som...

@billpete  The battery test will only tell you which way the woofer goes.  It should move one way or another.  The crossovers up  above will filter DC and prevent you from learning much more.  If you aren't getting much movement, consider a 9V ba...

The inversion in the preamp happens when you have a single tube gain stage. The famous Conrad Johnson PV10 and related pres were the same way. CJs philosophy was to minimize circuitry as much as possible so an additional tube just for polarity inv...

OP:   Worth pointing out that most multiway speakers need to reverse the polarity on one driver or another.  That's normal. By convention (but not requirement) the woofer is in positive polarity and then drivers above that may be flipped as nee...

PS - Rather than me try to describe this, why don't some of you try it?  Reverse the speaker leads and tell me what you hear. :)

Wouldn’t my system sound terrible if I have the speakers wired out of phase? @immathewj Honestly no. Hahaha. You have to have a good trained ear. It just so happens I’ve run across 2 situations in a month at 2 different dealers where this happ...
New split AC System impact on sound.
Yes, overall in most areas I'm on team Heat Pump for the win!
Speakers sound too bright.
To test a speaker use a standard battery, 1.5 to 9v and connect to your speaker.  positive to positive should move the woofers towards the listener.  Most important is for both speakers to move the same way.
Did I just cook my preamp?
How the preamp became so suddenly hazardous is beyond me. This is exactly why I tell people not to ever remove a ground pin. What happens is, as an example, the amp shorts the chassis to a high voltage, anywhere from imperfect to solidly sho...

Touch your woofers and make sure they are active.  Just want to cover the possibility they are malfunctioning first. :)
Did I just cook my preamp?
Hey OP, I just ran upstairs to answer you. I’m not usually an alarmist but it sounds like you have a potentially dangerous situation here. It seems like 2 things have occurred:   Equipment has had a malfunction shorting the power supply to t...
