size of the driver Low frequency extension depends on SPL. If toy woofers (sorry: 6 inch woofers) are tested at low spl they go deep. A 12 or 15 inch woofer goes deep at reasonable spl. Consider headphones. They go very deep, but their spl is very low, and satisfact...
size of the driver A driver is not characterized just by its size. Some 12 and 15 inch drivers have monster magnets and coils, and have a motor strength-to-cone-mass ratio as good as smaller drivers. Long cone excursion leads to non-linear spring effect, and distort...
Is anyone thinking about building Walsh drivers? Mapman... You can mount a conventional cone driver backwards firing down, but it isn't at all like a Walsh driver. The angle of the cone and its material must be such that sound propogated down the cone material is delayed by a time that, at every ...
Bi-amp question The concern over "different sounding amps" makes no sense. The drivers powered by the two amps are totally different technology, with sound characteristic differences far greater than that between two amps.
What determines good distortion? Some solid state amps have clip protection. Such amps produce a waveform smoothly limited in the same way as a tube amp. Also, mine is good for 600 watts, so I don't think I need to worry.
Dynaco MK III Monobloc Before Dyna, before Dynakit, the company manufactured transformers. They realized that between the Output and Power transformers they had most of the parts value of an amp. So, they put out the amp kits.I think the 60 watt monoblock was over $120 ...
How are Hig-End Speakers Priced? A grandson runs an import business... sales by internet. He had some small speakers priced at about $40. Few sales. He reintroduced the same speakers priced at $200. Sold many.Go figure.
Stupid speaker test question...please help a n00b Unsound... Everyone has access to a perfect anechoic test chamber. It is called "outdoors". I think it was KLH when it was a startup who used this.
Big 2 channel Amp OR Smaller 6 channel and TRIamp? Kal... I guess I would prefer option A, which, as I understand it simply means using a 300 watt amp for the speaker. I don't see any advantage to using more than one amp unless there is a line level crossover.Headroom reduces risk of clipping.
Stupid speaker test question...please help a n00b Square wave reproduction (as noted by Unsound) is a darned good objective test. Decades ago Ohm cited this in their promotional material. I have been told that a few other speakers pass this test.
Big 2 channel Amp OR Smaller 6 channel and TRIamp? Kal... Using a stereo power amp rated at 600 wpc (and therefore capable of large voltage swing, even continuously) I monitored peak voltage while playing dynamic music as loud, or louder, than I normally would do. With this setup I varied the cros...
Big 2 channel Amp OR Smaller 6 channel and TRIamp? Kal.... What do you think about my observation (based on measurements) that the equal power frequency (350 Hz or thereabout) is not what natters? I have found that with a real music signal the peak voltage swing requirement for the higher frequenc...
Which surround algorithm is better? The downfall of synthetic multichannel is trying to get those rear/surround channels. A center front channel can be very effectively derived from stereo material. Three channels from two is reasonable, but five from two is wishful thinking. I have...
No, You Cannot Bi-Amp Almarg's arguement makes sense to me. I believe that using two amps via the passive crossover ought to be called "dual amping" to distinguish it from true biamping using a line level crossover.I performed testing to determine how powerful an amp i...
No, You Cannot Bi-Amp Biamping made sense when amplifiers exhibited lots of IM distortion and a high powered amp was 60 watts. Not the case today. True biamping means that you use a line level crossover. Such a crossover is usually superior to a passive crossover, and ... |
