Vinyl Reason
Albertporter...You are not the typical vinyl fan. The ones I know are endlessly tweeking and adjusting and upgrading. And they seem to enjoy it, and talking about it.Your photography is good. Do you use a digital camera, or are you still into film?
Vinyl Reason
Audiophiles love to tweek their equipment.Vinyl playback systems can be endlessly "tweeked", but unlike most digital tweeks (like the plastic thing you place on top of your CDP) the analog tweeks actually make sense and can significantly affect th...
What does listening to a speaker really tell us?
1...Listen to a female vocalist. Does she appear between the speakers?2...Listen to a male news anouncer on the radio. Does his voice have an unnatural boom?3...Listen to a piano recording. Does it sound like a piano?4...Listen to a large orchestr...
Can we list the better labels? Chesky? Telarc?
Tacet, MDG.
Senior Audiophiles - Audiophile since the 60-70's?
Tbg...Yes, things have changed. It used to be that the "experts" were those with the best technical skills, and experience, but nowadays it seems to be those with the most money to spend. Ok, but it aint the same, and leads to a lot of snobishness.
Categorizing records
Being naturally adverse to clerical work, over many years on the job, which involved many memos and other documents I developed a chaotic method that actually proved to be, in its own way effective. After reading something, I simply threw it on to...
Center Channel Needed?
The center channel plays a very different role for movies than for music. My (good) system is used only for music, and my center channel is identical the the front left and right, consisting of a custom two driver subwoofer system and MG1.6 planar...
4 Ohm Speakers, 8 Ohm Amps
Bridging a stereo amp with a 4 ohm speaker means that each amp sees 2 ohms, and many cannot opearate properly with such a low load. A 4 ohm speaker, not bridged, should not be a problem with any decent amp.

Cinematic_systems...Whoops! You are right that in a second order or higher passive crossover some power is "dumped to ground". For example, for the woofer, after the inductor rolls off the highs, a capacitor to ground rolls them off further. Howev...
Problem with bass managment with many universals-
About the "optimum" SW crossover frequency...let me repeat my view that this varies a great deal according to the music. In general I think that the upper range of the SW is just as relevant as the lower range of the main speakers. In my particula...

Cinematic_systems...In a passive crossover, power does indeed "go to ground", but it goes through the drivers, which is the whole point of the thing. The power "wasted" by notch filters is minimal, unless the drivers are truly aweful. The 10 AWG ai...

Sean...Of course I am a long time believer in biamping, but I do think that the original reason (and I am talking about 50 years ago) was to avoid intermodulation distortion. Power amps have improved so that this is no longer a significant issue. ...
Review: Behringer DEQ2496 Equalizer
deq2496remote@xs4all.nl...I did buy a second one for my rear channels. In addition to generally improving the sound by eliminating all the room resonances, I found that level matching of my multichannel system was much improved. Apparently the res...

Fishboat...Mention of the MG1.6 is just to clarify what speakers I am making amp power observations about. I also have Dynaudio Gemini speakers, small (5" woofers) MTM boxes, and these also responded well to power increases up to 450 watts (4 ohms...
speaker excursion..."mo power"..and bass..Sean
I don't know why, but I have found that every increase in power (up to 600 watts) for my MG1.6 speakers has improved the sound. I don't think it is the power per se, but some other characteristic that tends to go along with high power capability.F...
