McIntosh MC240 needs restoration.
Definitely Audio Classics.  Talk to Ryan.  Matt has the right call on the box, too.  Don't fool around.
record cleaning methods......................
I'm sure folks will chime in shortly, but you should run a search.  There are over 7200 threads on this topic in the archives.Happy listening!
VPI or Pro-ject
Give consideration to a Sota Sapphire.  It's a terrific table at a great price point.  With your budget, you could fit it with a great tonearm and cartridge.  Fully equal or superior to either the Pro-ject or VPI, IMO.Good luck & happy listening!
When is your Hifi good enough?
When I consistently hear new details and nuances in material I know well.  Still at that stage with my current rig, so consider myself "there" at this point in time. For contrast, I recently did some auditions with TOTL Magicos and Wilsons driven b...
Cartridge Advice
Second the DV suggestion.  The 17 was one of the very best when originally released back in the day and subsequent upgrades have kept it current (D3 now).  Can't speak to synergy with the Krell gear, but tube pre-pre and the B&Ws should love i...
New TT -- $1k - $1500
FWIW, there is a Sota Sapphire that just popped up here from a guy in Toronto with a number of updates at the low end of your range.  That leaves enough room left over for both a new arm and cartridge if desired.  I have been totally satisfied wit...
Which has higher priority, overhang or VTA?
Some good points above, and my experience has been that VTA has a substantial impact on sound.  Conical styli are unaffected by VTA as they have a uniform cross-section from tip to base.  All other styli shapes are affected to greater or lesser de...
Turntable for life
+1 to williewonka and smoffatt!  The Planar II with a DV Karat 17 RS was the table that first taught me that audio could be a lifetime hobby full of magic.  I replaced it with a new Sota Sapphire Series III in 1984 that I'm still using today.  Had...
Needle just gets stuck in a particular spot of the record ! What is going on?
Dweller, you noted I purchased "Are You Experienced" special edition, audiophile vinyl, numbered edition, etc. about 20 years ago and never played it until this year. There is an impassible spot in one song; A bridge from one groove-side to the nex...
turntables
+1 yogiboy!  A great table in that range.  Plenty of choices here on A'goN, plus straight from the source and other retailers.  Totally upgradeable if you want to go that way, and will do just about everything, IMO.Good luck and happy listening!
Personal amp evolution
Sansui 1000x receiver (still have), Concept 5.5 receiver (traded), Hafler DH200 kit (sold), Dunlap-Clarke Dreadnaught 500 (sold), Akai integrated (traded), Hafler DH220 (sold), Sony STR-AV 970 surround receiver (still have), Belles Model 1 (still ...
What would be a good turntable/tonearm/cartridge
You will want to post your budget range and speakers to get useful responses. That said, I'm personally a fan of Sota tables, Dynavector cartridges, SME, Graham and DV arms. DV has worked especially well with the CJ gear I've auditioned, but every...
mcintosh c52 vs 2300/2500 preamplifier
That was my perception. The C2300 was about as good as it gets, at any price. I may go back to tubes and get a C2500 at some point, but not until I have more free time.
mcintosh c52 vs 2300/2500 preamplifier
2300/2500 = tubes, 50/52 = solid state. Different sound. 2300 does not have a DAC, 2500 does (up to 32 bit 192 kHz). 50 has the same 32 bit 192 kHz DAC while the 52 has a new DAC that has 32 bit 192 kHz and DSD.I had a 2300 and loved it, but found...
Cleaning records. How often really?
FWIW, I have cleaned all my LPs with an ultrasonic system, applied LAST mold release (only to new, sealed & unplayed records), treated them with LAST preservative and used a ZeroStat before putting them in anti-static sleeves. I still use an o...
