what's your opinion on the magazine 'stereo review'??
HiFi News and Record Review -- Yeah!  I ran across it one evening while cruising a newsstand near where I lived.  Superb, subjective reviews of both classical LPs and hardware.  Loved Ken Kessler.  Not much later, I became buddies with Kevin Conkl...
what's your opinion on the magazine 'stereo review'??
My dad had a subscription to the rag when it was still Hi Fi review, and I read the thing religiously from about age eight to my late teenage years. But yes, it was a total revelation when somebody turned me on to The Absolute Sound.  Wow, they're...
Cassettes still rock!
They sound better when the tape begins to stretch and flake, too!
Beware of NAD M3 Fire Hazard
Send your pic to NAD.  Link this thread to NAD, as well.  With luck you may get an appropriate response from them.  In any case, don't plug it in again!
Do any of you "meditate" on your music?
I just enjoy music too much to call my listening meditation.
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
"Classical" is the generic term for the style of music we're talking about here.  Yes, it narrowly refers to the music upper class Europeans listened to from about 1750 to about 1820 but it's totally okay to call J.S. Bach, George Gershwin, Tchaik...
Vivaldi, played badly, is the worst classical music on earth
Like most classical guys, I'm thoroughly sick of Vivaldi's Four Seasons.  But I gotta say that one of my favorite slabs of vinyl is the DG Archiv release Concerti da Camera, Vivaldi chamber music performed by Musica Antiqua Koln.  Great tunes.  An...
Advice on Music
You might try Easy Listening or MOR, Middle of the Road.  Yeah, they're kind of  demeaning names for a genre but they might get you some decent artists to try.  I gotta tell you, too, that I inherited a lot of MOR, Sinatra-style LPs from my parent...
What other Hobbies or Interests Do You Have?
My wife still uses sew-up/tubular tires on her Campy-ed out Colnago C59.  I went to clinchers when I heavily crashed my Time Edge Translink about ten years ago and replaced the twisted-up steed with my fully-built Bianchi Infinito.  Ya know what? ...
Maybe being discerning isn't that good for us?
It's okay to be totally crazed over stuff. Ya just have to know when to lighten up,
What other Hobbies or Interests Do You Have?
geoffkait -- I've been an Alfa lover since time immemorial, but the only one I ever actually possessed was a rental sedan I had in Southern France about ten years ago.  And ya know, it may have been a bit under-powered but it was a heck of a good ...
What other Hobbies or Interests Do You Have?
My advanced-age chickenheartedness (spurred on by a couple of serious shunts) has seriously impeded my road bike mileage but I'm still devoted to the pastime.  I watch every bicycle race that shows up on MSNBC (which are many).  I miss Paul Sherwy...
Digiital source material: what do people do/makes the most sense...
Qobuz has a pretty good classical selection and the streaming fidelity is music to my ears. But if you really want to own the classical record store of your dreams, try Primephonic. Sound quality may be a hair less than from the Q, but it is never...
Bose 901
For me, the 901 Bose was a worthwhile way station on the path to high-end.
Why Are Mono LP's So Undervalued By Most Classical Collector/Listeners?
I just can't get past the 3D imaging and visceral sense of space that comes from genuine, quality stereo recordings. As lovely as a mono recording might be when it comes to performance and timbre, it just ain't enough for this dude.  Right now, fo...
