Home audio drivers vs. car audio drivers Car audio actually has way more hype and BS, if you can believe it (!) than home audio. More of it is crap than the equivalent home audio stuff. I've built stuff using car audio 2-way separates before - they were ok, but really nothing outstanding...
Most Refined? Plinius 102 - Bryston 4B - Pass 250 I was helping out in that room. We had the SA102 biased into class A most of the time - that helped the sound. The Pass stuff is a newer design - no idea vs. which is better. I have owned the 47Lab gaincard - it's a nice amp that has more power th...
Changing EL-34's to 6550 or Kt-88's I have had the PR. 5's which are the monoblock version of PR. 4. It can only take EL34's in stock form. You would not want to switch anyway - EL34 is far more musical than 6550s and the like. In fact, CJ offers a mod on their top of the line Premi...
What do Oil Caps do and how do they effect sound? Correction in order here bomby: "845 tube. This is a radio broadcasting type tube & the grid is biased at 1500V! "No, sorry - not correct. max PLATE voltage on 845 is 1250v, and ASL doesnt' run them that hard. They would not bias the grid high...
What do Oil Caps do and how do they effect sound? Oil caps are one of the original types of capacitors - usually using paper wound with foil, bathed in an oil dielectric. Often in a rectangular, oval, or round can with two terminals on one end. There are modern day equivalents, Jensen makes some ...
Tube Equivalent for 6111WA Check http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/ 6111wa is a military variant of some type. -Ed
ipod and dac? The Ipod uses a very small HD, so the price comparison to the Maxtor (a larger format drive) is not valid in this case. There's only one manufacturer that makes the small drives, last I checked. the case and software certainly is worth $400+ I thi...
best for home theater? revel or aerial acoustics? I've heard all those - I would choose the Aerial stuff. Better made, better sound. The CC5 is as good as any center channel gets, from anyone, IMHO. 9s are very nice too, though 6, 7, 8s are no slouches either. -Ed
great little speakers Harbeth P3 (which is basically an LS 3/5A design, only better.). Hard to beat, esp. for the price. Definitely better than Spendor.-Ed
The best way to isolate my subs from the floor? Try something with bicycle innertubes. I used these wrapped around some home-made Sonotube-based subs, with good effect. I have 16" subs, put 3 inner tubes around it, lightly inflated them - worked quite well. Try a platform of MDF with sub on top...
Anyone listened to a Wavac? Jim, 4304 = 834 - just different basing between them, if anything. it's a cylindrical plate triode that had grid and plate pins, right? Well designed for A2 operation (as is the norm with the IIT/shishido set up of most Wavac stuff I think.) Wish ...
Wadia 921 sound / comparaison to EMM Labs the 921 was more than just a dac. Sound of the Wadia was very nice, though the rest of the system was better than the supporting system in the meitner room, IMHO. build quality (at least from the outside) on the Wadia seemed to be to a higher stan...
About the EMM Labs DAC Tim - I have heard the EMM labs stuff, on several occasions. Heard his prototype transport @ CES too. Not bad looking, finally - still smacks of pro-gear look though, which IMHO is not really expected @ the price point it is at. (BTW, $5k was not ...
Anyone listened to a Wavac? I heard their stuff at the shows. I think they had the 805 amps running, which was nice. The new anniversary Sh-833's were also running, those were way over the top. Not sure on price but the better part of $100k I bet. Sounded great, nice build q... |
