Preamplifier, in need of input
@milpai I’ve tried Radiotechnique 12AU7, Amperex 7308 and Tungsram 7DJ8. I’m in no rush to spend more to try to find something better than the Psvanes.
Preamplifier, in need of input
I recommend adding the PS Audio BHK Signature preamp to your list, for much less than your target price. As good as the XP-22 is, which I had for a year, the BHK sounds more fleshed out and gives up only a minuscule amount of leading edge transien...
To all PS Audio BHK preamp owners *** must read ***
I tried it and it’s no better and possibly somewhat worse. I may have detected a slight thinning of the lower mids and flattening of the soundstage. I’m not sure really but I’m keeping at the designed 4mv spec. I don’t understand Bascom’s rational...

Well now I’m really curious so I guess I’ll try it.
PSVANE 12Au7 12At7 12Ax7 "-T MKII" 2020 production run of small signal/driver tubes
I have about 100 hours on them. I think they sounded great right away and I haven’t noticed any difference since. I’m have my doubts about tube break in. What is there to break in? It’s not like there’s a dielectric to form. Or maybe the surroundi...

Try switching it back. Does it sound worse? Per BHK himself: “The intent of the bias or tube operating switch was to allow for the use of the 12AU7 and the 6922 family of tubes. For the 6922 types, the current was set for 5 mA and for the 12AU7, 4...
PSVANE 12Au7 12At7 12Ax7 "-T MKII" 2020 production run of small signal/driver tubes
Does it have to be 2020? I have a set of the 12Au7s that came with my PS Audio BHK Signature preamp that I bought at the end of last year. I think they sound great, better than the highly rated Radiotechniques that I just got. In this circuit, whi...
Why do you think Bi-Wiring improves the sound ?
I believe RVs argument is something along the lines of having separate wires for the highs and the lows helps prevent back EMF from the large magnet in the woofer from interfering as much with the high frequencies. This I learned from a biwire que...
Recommendations for a tonearm upgrade on a VPI Classic 4 turntable
When I ordered my Classic 4, I had a new SME 312s sent to VPI to have it installed. The arm sounds excellent but after having lived with it for three years, I have the following minor criticisms:1) VTA adjustment is imprecise and not doable on the...
What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
With my Vandersteen 5A Carbons, the Vandersteen M5-HPA.
van den Hul Colibri, Koetsu Rosewood Signature, SoundSmith Sussurro Mk ii
I just got a Soundsmith Sussurro Mk 2 and I love it. According to this review of an earlier model, it tracks better than anything he tried except for the Shure V15 series, and my listening tests confirm that: https://www.dagogo.com/soundsmith-suss...
PS Audio BHK preamp owners
This has been discussed on the BHK preamp thread at PSAudio. I’m quite sure that you are supposed to only use the bias setting that matches the tube type: 12au7 gets 4ma; 6922 family, which also includes the 7 volt types, 5ma. I believe Bascom him...
best phono stage under 10k
I recommend the Pass XP-27, which is a major upgrade from the XP-17 and not just in terms of convenience. It is dead quiet and I doubt pretty much anything else can convey as much detail, while also sounding full and rich like a tube unit.
Considering Rogue Audio or P.S. Audio
I just put in an order today for a BHK Signature preamp. I used to have an RP-7 and I thought it lost out in terms of neutrality, bass power and transient attack compared to the Pass XP-22 that replaced it. As much as I like the Pass, I’ve also co...
Cartridge loading
i have a Kiseki Purpleheart mounted on an SME 312S feeding a Pass XP 17. I don’t know the capacitance of the included tonearm cable, though I may try to find that out. I’m pretty sure that when I did the tonearm/cartridge resonance calculation, th...
