Coda 11, Schiit Tyr, JC5 or ???
But you don't need power to get high average levels. You only need four watts to listen at 86 dB average level(very loud as an average) at 2 meters. You need power to maintain clean sound during and after large peaks(such as not untypical 30 dB pi...
ATC active vs. passive
Brad gave a great description of the ATC 50. I'll add a big reason why active is better. Amplifier tests are done with resistors of a given value. Real speakers are not resistors to the amp, the are also capacitors and inductors and their affects ...
The Great DAC Mystery
Just a comment on measurements. I heard a one off custom set of speakers that were wonderful. The designer was very technical. And always looking for correlation between any measurements and what's heard I asked him how he used measurements in his...
Stand Mount Speakers for Classic Rock that sound alive at lower volumes ?
If any speaker is essentially flat it will sound bass shy and a small treble loss at low volumes due to Fletcher/Munson affect at our ears. Bass and treble roll off at low levels at our ears. Our ears are flat at about 100dB. Even at 80 dB, fairly...
???YOUR Personal Favorite???Why???
I recall reviewing a set of ATC 19 speakers about 8 years ago I liked a lot. And this is a foolish thin since I haven't heard them but I do believe in measurements, especially when they are extraordinary, Ex Machina makes 3 powered 3 way speakers ...
New Radiant Acoustics Clarity 6.2’s
Just a comment. With a passive radiator there is no opening but the acoustic characteristics of a passive radiator are essentially the same a bass reflex. The term closed box here is misleading since the bass character is nothing like a closed box.
FirstWatt SIT-3 or Pass Labs XA25 for Avalon Indras?
Power isn't just for loudness. It's for fidelity. Even at low level on some music peaks can be 20 to 30dB. To play them accurately you need tons of power. P.S. The comment on Fletcher/Munson also applies. Our ears are flat around 100dB. Bass is w...
Anyone remember the days before bells and whistles!
For a real lack of bells and whistles, in the 60s high end speaker cable was 14 gauge lamp cord in stead of 16 gauge.
Anyone remember the days before bells and whistles!
Just for the sake of history the Marantz oscilloscope was introduced in the mid 60s in the Marantz 10 tuner, one of the all time classic  audio products.
ATC SCM50 (passive) v. Devore O/93
If you pick the ATC50, I advise you to go for the active version, especially since you said you're also getting an amp. The active ATC 50 is noticeably better than the already fine passive version and you'll probably save money. For what it's wor...
Favorite moment with music in your car.
In the late 70s I was driving north from Baltimore to New Jersey listening to a decades long folk music show from Philadelphia, Folklore, emceed by Gene Shay. He played a song sung by Priscilla Herdman, who had an utterly gorgeous , angelic voice,...
Thoughts? - First Watt F8 / Vandersteen Treo's
Vandersteen calls the Treo a 6 ohm load. Unlike most solid state amps which have more wattage into lower impedance loads the F8 reduces power  into lower impedances putting out 1/2 power into 4 ohms so the 6 ohm output is probably midpoint or abou...
VPI Scoutmaster to HRX
Why the HRX? It's long been out of production. I'd look at some of the current VPI tables. A version of the Classic 3 is being produced and that seems like a good table to look into.
Worst Speakers Ever??
Hi again bdp24. It turns out one of the speakers we also had at Wall to Wall Sound was the original ESS Heil speakers. They were ok(small letters). And we had one set of vinyl Dynaco A25 speakers on sale for $52/pair(They were just there for bait ...
Worst Speakers Ever??
In the 1970s I was friends with Gordon Holt and helped him with Stereophile. bdp24 reminded me that Gordon was throwing out a set of ESS Transtatic Ones. He was late reviewing them and ESS didn't want them back because they had gone onto the Heil ...
