Cheap receiver + amp vs Expensive receiver
Kschiu - with the Integra pre/pro and a 5 channel amp, how would you use the new amp for HT and the tube amp for 2 channel? Usually with this type of hybrid system, you use a HT bypass solution, but that is a lot harder with a tube amp?Swapping sp...
New codecs worth making a switch right now?
Let me describe PCM/LPCM and the lossess codecs in some detail and how they relate to HDMI. Sorry for all the detail if you already know this.First, most people use PCM and LPCM interchangeably. The L stands for "Linear" and deals with how the sam...
Is hdmi a must have for home theater?
There are actually multiple issues at play here and there is no one easy answer. For audio quality, the main issues are decoders, DACs and post-processing modes. The decoders for the major formats (either traditional DD or DTS or the new lossless fo...
Home Theater Preamp/amp advice.
I ran my GPs with a B&K 200.7 for a while and it was a nice combination, especially for home theater. Used it with Thiel SCS3 and SF Concertino's for surrounds. It was a nice combo. Have the 200.7 running Thiels in another setup now and that w...
Home Theater Preamp/amp advice.
I second ATI as a good option for an amp - 1505 or 1805. If you could get a 3 channel (or pick up a 2 channel and add a third through ATI - although the shipping may kill you) you could drive the rear channels with the receiver. B&K 200 watt/c...
Preamp w/ xlrs in the ht-bypass loop
A used Classe CP-65 would fit the bill for less than $2,000 and usually closer to $1,500. It was $5,000 when new. It has a separate power supply and 3 balanced and 3 single ended inputs, and a balanced and single ended tape loop. It has 2 balanced...
What is the best way to add a 5:1 system
As a start you could get a 5.1 AVR with pre-outs and use the pre-outs connected to your C46 for the LR channels and use the amps in the AVR for the center and surrounds. If you want to upgrade the center, you could then add a monoblock for the cen...
Connecting a remote server to a high end system
Peter - My observation has been that the files I ripped to Apple lossless (iTunes 8.0.1 I believe) and then converted to WAV files are bit for bit identical with WAV files I ripped with EAC. Bit for for bit identical files cannot sound different w...
Lossless conversion format help
Lou - My point is that I think the Apple lossless files are a correct lossless representation of the original CD. Any differences you hear between ALAC and WAV is probably due to the software involved (iTunes, QuickTime, etc.) and not to the music...
Lossless conversion format help
Daedalus_audio - Apple lossless is indeed lossless. You can convert a WAV file to Apple lossless and then back to WAV and the original and converted WAV files are bit for bit identical. You can rip a file to Apple lossless and convert it to WAV an...

Same comment again - it is Stacey Kent, not Tracey Kent. Agree - Stacey and Jim are a geat combo.
Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home vs Concerto Domus
I would be careful. I have the GP Home (and Concerto, Concertino and also Cremona) and really like them. When I listened to the Domus GP, I thought the sweet musicality was gone. The Domus are more detailed and maybe less "colored", but I thought ...
Why is J River better than iTunes on PC?
I recently converted from iTunes to J River Media Center 13 because J River offers 1) ability to play 24/96 file formats, 2) can use ASIO to bypass KMixer (not an issue on Vista), 3) has a more flexible user interface. For example, with J River I ...

Would that be Stacey Kent? One of my favorites. Incidently, Stacey is in NYC at Birdland June 2-6.
stereo reciever for sonus faber grand piano Home
I have a similar setup in my bedroom - SF Home Concerto in the bedroom and inwalls in the bathroom. I went a somewhat unusual route that you might want to consider, although it is takes a little effort to set up. I use a low end integrated as the ...
