Ultrasonic record cleaners Thanks for everyone sharing their knowledge and experience in this thread. As a consequence, I have modified my ultrasonic cleaning process in several ways: 1. I extended the de-gassing cycle to the time it takes to warm up the water bath to 35 C...
how were copies of vinyl made in "third-party" countries From my experience I can tell you that every LP I’ve listened to from the former eastern bloc (USSR, Czech, etc.) is awful. The only reason I bought them was to listen to a performance by historically important musicians, who were among the best ...
Ultrasonic record cleaners While I’ve heard great things about the expensive US cleaners, I couldn’t justify the 3k price, given I only had a few hundred LP's, so I bought the VEVOR for $200, and it seems to do an excellent job. I don’t know how it would compare to other cl...
Cables to settle brightness I haven't read the other comments, but if you have a problem with brightness, I wouldn't look to cables for the fix. Firstly, look at room treatments: sound absorbers, etc. Secondly, find out which component of yours is causing the brightness, ...
Preamps can color sound considerably. Surprising? In my experience, a passive pre-amplifier does not color the sound (much) at all. All active pre-amplifiers, even running my same Ypsilon pre-amplifier in active mode (vs. passive mode) color the sound to a greater degree.
Phono Stage Upgrade From what I read, and from what people with experience have directly related to me, there are a few very good options, and neither would necessarily be wrong, but just different: Ypsilon and EM/IA phono stages could be considered two of the best ...
Tube preamp recommendations for Pass X260.8 monos If you want transparency and neutrality, nothing that I’m aware of would beat an Ypsilon PST 100 Mk2, run in passive mode.
New Rega P10 setup @marktheshark I used a P8 for a few years. I learned that anything and everything affects the SQ. You can have it on an isolated platform, and it sounds one way; place isolation pucks under it and it sounds differently; place rubber feet under i...
First record cleaner I would think that most would recommend an ultrasonic record cleaner. The shiny, best ones are a few thousand dollars, but you can get a VEVOR ultrasonic cleaner for records for only $200, and it seems to work quite well…
Direct Drive @terry9 I may have misunderstood you, but you mentioned that "there is no such thing as instantaneous speed measurement in the real world": AnalogMagik software does measure instantaneous speed. I think Fremer may use it, or possibly have some...
Weak Link in chain as I upgrade from mid-fi? Here’s what you don’t want to hear: unfortunately, the more you spend, the better the sound. At every step along the way, there’s going to be a mismatch, where one part of your system exposes weaknesses of another part of your system. There’s no w...
Phono Preamplifier Redux .. Damn This is Getting Expensive Based on my personal experience, and as another mentioned above, you probably need to spend 20k in analog to get SQ like 10k in digital, but from what I’ve read 60-80k in analog is better than 120k in digital. So, at lower prices, it’s hard to be...
Great classical pianists @esarhaddon I cannot disagree with you that many of today’s classical pianists "are too tightly bound by a rigid performance controlled by the original score". However, most of Claudio Arrau’s recordings will demonstrate quite the opposite: he i...
Great classical pianists Not much finesse by your favorite Alexandra, but perhaps that’s because everyone sounds like an amateur compared to Claudio Arrau. . . I think you would do yourself a great favor by comparing this same piece performed by your favorite, then Arrau...
How many plays can you get out of a good record? @cey Yes, one answer to the question "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?", but perhaps the answer to my question is the same; however, there were good suggestions about record and stylus preservation material... |
