Tube Life Artifacts
Thanks for the advice. I'll check it out. I've been looking at these, including Telefunkens at $190 per pair. Seems a bit high, no?http://www.audiotubes.com/6bq5.htmI have no relationship with this seller, and this link is not an endorsement. I po...

I haven't decided if the better cymbals with the Philips is real, or just a consequence of a suppressed and less liquid midrange. But it's true, the Philips only have about 12 hours on them. The Chinese guy raved about them, but then he was sellin...

Ok, I found those NOS Philips and swapped them in. Maybe a slightly better treble, as the cymbals are louder and seem to fade slower. But the RCAs are back in. They have much better bass and mids. More balanced across the whole spectrum. I don't he...
I knew we were different
Interesting. I have only gotten "chills" from live music, and never goosebumps. However, I occasionally get a dopamine flood, from certain recordings, if it's turned up loud enough. It's like someone has slapped you in the face and said "Pay  atten...
Cheap Box Sets
I'm surprised you're asking this, but just as a rough price point, I'd say that any brand new box set at $5 per disk or less is probably a pretty good deal. Assuming the sound quality/mastering or remastering are up to par. Here's another contender...
Brightest but shortest artistic bursts in the sky
"Waiting for the Sun" was one of the most disappointing LPs I ever bought. Even more disappointing than "Satanic Majesties Request" by the Stones. And while I would agree that both groups redeemed themselves by their later releases, particularly L...
Brightest but shortest artistic bursts in the sky
I gotta disagree with the 2nd Grape album. Maybe not as consistent or hard-edged as the first, but a wonderful record. It's got some great blues, the Miller numbers "Can't Be So Bad" and "Miller's Blues", and Mosley's great "Bitter Wind". I also l...

They are Philips brand tubes. The seller told me they were made by Mullard, but he was Chinese and I may have misunderstood. The amps were recapped in the 80s and may need it again, but for now, they seem to be working well. There's a little hissi...
Cheap Box Sets
Astaire is an unusual choice.  Not what I'd expect to be recommended here. Two sets that I've been considering:Fairport Convention : 5 Classic AlbumsTerry Reid :Original Album Series - Terry Reid  Both inexpensive,  great music. But I'm unsure of ...

I tend to "roll" signal tubes and preamp tubes more than the power tubes. This has made larger differences in my mind. But once I've got it sounding good, across different sources, I don’t want to mess with it.In any case, just shifting the tubes ...

After swapping tubes around, the problem seems to have disappeared. I also tried the tap testing, with no obvious differences. Perhaps I should try cleaning all the pins. A friend of mine suggested that I bring him all the tubes and he'll test the...

Thanks. If I could find my spares,  I'd swap them out now. I thought they were in a box marked "Dynaco", but all that was in there was EL34s.The last time I moved, I packed them up very carefully.  Too carefully, it seems. Now I have about 30 boxe...
Who is your overall favorite guitarist?
I have to go with Danny Gatton, too. I only saw him live once, but it changed my world.Depending on your tastes in genre, you might pick Paco, Jim Hall, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow or Pierre Bensusan. All perfectly good choices. But Gatton blows me away.
The value of of the sealed record.
I usually play LPs that I have purchased still sealed. I have some Hendrix that is still sealed, but only because I have tolerable older ones. The only mistake I have made was opening a Sons of Champlin record that I didn't know was very rare. I la...
