Question concerning the Mint Tractor
Thom,Good point about errors compounding, and interesting virtual observations from the stylus' POV. I've learned alot by doing those gedankenexperimenten. The force vectors on a misaligned stylus must indeed put stresses on cantilever and suspens...
Mint Tractor
What Palasr said ^^^I haven't bothered taping the platter or a protractor in several years. If you work carefully and delicately then nothing will move. If you don't work carefully and delicately, you shouldn't be aligning a phono cartrdidge! :-)
Question concerning the Mint Tractor
True observation, Tvad. Overhang will surely change every time one plays an LP differing in height from the Mint (or whatever protractor was used). Adjusting VTA/SRA is indeed an inexact science, but fortunately it's a very exact art. :-) We adjus...
Upgrade for users of 1/2" mylar belt
Great description of the stripping process by Dan_Ed above and Jfd01 is correct, the etching cream has no effect on the other side. Mylar is impervious to most acids.Stltrains,The black mylar streamer from McCormick's is just 1.0 mil thick. That's...
Upgrade for users of 1/2" mylar belt
Thanks for finding that link, Jfd01. I've got it at home, but I'm not at home!Frank_sm,Removing that silver backing you're not keen on is the whole point of this thread. When you do, only clear mylar is left.
Question concerning the Mint Tractor
Tim's geometry clarification was excellent. In addition, changing VTA on most arms alters VTF, so the cantilever wouldn't be sitting at the same angle as it does during play.
Question concerning the Mint Tractor
Josephdtorres,The Mint's thicker than any LP I've seen, including old 230-240g Deccas. Alignment should be accomplished with all parameters as close to actual playing conditions as possible. Why align for any other condition? This includes VTA, wh...

Frank sm,Are you using video splicing tape? The silver tabs inevitably spread as you described. So do general purpose tapes, and they can leave glue residue on your platter too. Splicing tape won't spread. I've had two year old splices that were a...
Stylus shape and skating force
Agree completely with Kirkus and Audiofeil. It doesn't sound to me like anything's wrong with your rig or your setup, though it can't hurt to check. Everything you described is normal, including the need for care when cueing. Your new stylus proba...

Thanks for the report Jfd01. :-) Good job hearing through the trick of flabby mid-bass that gives an impression of body but masks the texture and overtones of real bass instruments. The greater extension in HF's is, I think, due to more stable pla...
Matching Cartridge to Hovland Phono
Let's get the story straight! ;-)If you're using the .3mv version of the Dyna then, yes, you should be using the MC inputs. The gain structure is fine, which is why you're having no issues in that regard. The only question is impedance. This is ext...
Matching Cartridge to Hovland Phono
Arm/cart matching is certainly critical, but so is cart/phono matching. If you've ever heard a significant mismatch you'd know it, so Stickman asked a good question and his specs provide good examples.Stickman, The DV-20XL puts out 2.8mv. Your MC ...
Cartridge aging and tip wear symtoms?
If you can hear surface noise or any other effects of stylus wear, you've probably already done permanent damage to your vinyl.Assuming clean vinyl and proper setup, the main factor in maximizing stylus life is the size and shape of the stylus. Th...
Mint Tractor
No lifting by the edges, no bending-flexing, remembering to lift the entire protractor straight up.Bending and flexing aren't possible. It's a sturdy sheet of glass. Lifting straight up? It's such a snug fit on the spindle there's no other choice....
Mint Tractor
Mark,It's both! ;-) Yip prints the overhang arc and alignment lines on a sheet of very thin, matte finish plastic, which he then applies to a glass mirror.
