What tubed preamp that is not too fussy ?
Second the c-j PV10. I've had a PV-11 since 1991 with zero problems. A friend has had a PV-10 for 6+ years with similar success. Should you ever need it, c-j's support is topnotch even if you bought it used.
What am I hearing???
Good explanation Stehno. One reason for time smearing in cables (or any device passing an electrical signal) is the dielectric effect of the insulation layer. Since no insulation except a vacuum is perfect, some of the signal will travel through t...
VTA adjusting for Denon DL-103
Agree with Jphii, though having the armtube *approximately* level for an "average" thickness record (whatever that is) is not a bad idea. I agree it's not worth fretting over though, the cartridge-record relationship is far more critical than the ...
Conrad Johnson MF2500A & Dyn's 1.3SE
Durbin,Great point about the tweeters. Neither the metal tweeters nor the kevlar mids in my N803's would forgive a forward sounding amp. I'd have to repaint the walls of the listening room once a week!
Analog Set-up Tools
Now, Patrick. Let's not forget that setting up a Rega is such good training and discipline, a real character builder. Any moron can set up a Graham! :-)
Shelter 501mkii Cantilever Angle - Need Help
Yes, it's just a piece of fabric glued around the motors. Sounds to me like you're okay.

Why are you assuming it's the amp? I've had one powering B&W N803's for about 15 months and other than warmup its performance has never changed AFAIK.You might try a demag CD like the one made by Ayre. We run it every couple of months. It clea...
Shelter 501mkii Cantilever Angle - Need Help
If you mean there's 2mm between the record and the bottom corner of the dust shield, that's plenty. I have a 901 and am currently breaking in a friend's 901 while he's on holiday. Neither one has any more clearance than that, probably less.If you ...
Seeking help with feedback through audio system
It is really weird. There are some facts that I haven't been able to square with each other:- it starts/stops with moving the stylus on/off the record - but it's independent of groove modulation- it starts/stops with the level of the gain control-...
Seeking help with feedback through audio system
Since the gain setting effects whether the sound exists or not, it seems likely the problem's in or after the gain stage. Occam's Razor. Try removing and reinserting the tubes in the Cortese. Or ship the Cortese to me and I'll study it for awhile!...
Seeking help with feedback through audio system
Hmm, tough one. This seems like the key behavior to me: "It ... does not amplify or get louder, it just remains constant until a few seconds after the overall system volume is lowered."Can you measure/elaborate on this? Exactly what happens when y...
Living with popping and crackling
I've got 3 copies of that Rubinstein and I agree, none of them is particularly quiet. I gave up after realizing that I don't even like Rubinstein's Beethoven. Not sour grapes, I love his Chopin like everyone. But he just doesn't "get" Beethoven fo...

Makes sense to me. I use tube pre/ss power and it works quite well IMO. As for the price difference, you're comparing a mainstream manufacturer who sells via traditional distributor/retailer channels to a direct marketed brand that caters to the D...
What are my chances
Sure you can. The easy way is to look for a pre that has an HT pass-through (a/k/a unity gain pass through). It takes the front L & R analog feeds from your processor and sends them on to the two channel amp as usual, without effecting gain. T...
