Dan,Congrats on your decision and thanks for sharing your journey with us. I expect Thom's table will keep you spinning and smiling for many years, perhaps forever.I believe Thom's shipping account with UPS has a mileage limit, and that NH is just...
Record Cleaning Machine
Rum,I use the Loricraft fluid only for scummy records that don't clean up with my normal regimen. The Loricraft normal and heavy-duty fluids both contain large amounts of alchohol. I prefer not to use alchohol if possible. My normal regimen include...

Frank,Are you sure that wasn't Tri Mai you were "modifying"?Nobody's heard from him in days. ;-)***Thom's mention of the demo room effect and two listener types reminded me of a recent experience. Our new SPM speaker cables have less zing and obvi...

Only 15 coatings of oil instead of 50-60!Chris, did you get a big discount? Oil prices being what they are and all.
Is Direct Drive Really Better?
That's the 2 mil mylar belt, which is a close second best of all the ones I've tried. Dan may remember seeing a holographic silver belt on our table. It out-torques the 2 mil clear one by a small but audible margin, not because of the color (presu...
Is Direct Drive Really Better?
Dan,Do you remember the color of the belt on the 320 and 280? That isn't as silly a question as it sounds. While I don't believe a BD Teres will ever match a well implemented DD Teres (especially when the DD costs twice the price) it is true that t...

Thom, You let poor audiophile Dan get away without hearing the best available arm/cartridge combo? We need to talk... ;-)I haven't heard the Dyna, but I totally concur with Thom's differentiation of the Schroeder Ref and TriPlanar VII. With the sa...

Dan,The 320 and 380 are about the same size? Egad! You'll have to help us out my friend. I just mailed Nick some RatShack resistors for your new preamp and suggested he wire it with lamp cord, instead of that exotic stuff he normally uses. He than...

Dan,Great report. Glad to hear you made it home okay and that you're high enough not to be flooded. We didn't think about it when we bought our home, but I'm glad we chose one on a ridge line and not down in some valley bottom. Some of our neighbo...
Oracle Delphi vs. ??? fill in the blank.
If you're buying a TT based on how it looks, no one can help you but you. Buy the Oracle like Jaybo said and be happy. If you're interested in best sonic performance in that price range, I tend to agree with Raul.A third possibility, which combines...
Cartridge alignment help.
First, make sure all alignment and setup parameters are correct, including VTF and azimuth as well as overhang/zenith. A slight inaccuracy in azimuth could cause this problem. If that doesn't help then the JMW-9's rudimentary antiskate "adjustment"...
"High end" cartridge use on VPI SCOUT??
Dean_Fuller,That is a good question. It is important not to overspend on one component compared to the value/performance level of related components. IME this is especially true of cartridges. A "too good" cartridge can easily expose the shortcomi...
Whats the best MC cartridge for my new VPI SCOUT?
Before offering suggestions the following questions should be asked:1. Which Mac preamp? Does it have a phono stage? If so, what are its gain and input impedance?2. What kind of music will you be playing?3. What kind of sonic results are you after...
Cartridge alignment help.
I've read good reports on VA about the optional antiskate mechanism VPI now offers for the JMW-9. If you can't get the right adjustment with the wire-twist method, that might be worth looking into.
