Since solder is such a poor conductor, why use it?
TBG"Almarg, I doubt seriously if the solder you and I have access to is anything like that used in the military."The military and NASA specs call out fairly ordinary solder!I worked in QA, on military and aerospace electronics.
CD Sound ; Esoteric x-03 versus Oppo 105
I have heard several BIG BUCK (>> $10k) CD/SACD players, and NONE matched my obsolete Sony 5400!IMO, YMMV! It is a legitimate question.
Directional cables - what does that really mean?
For interconnects with a shield there is less EMF/RFI pickup, when the shield is connected only at the source end.EMI/RFI may or my not be a problem. It depends on if radio waves or power cables are nearby.
Pass Labs XA60.5
I use the XA60.5's to power my Magnepan 3.6's in a medium sized room (28X16 ft). They can play very loud (IMO) with the meters moving very briefly to 1:00 o'clock on a few, very dynamic peaks.Per a phone discussion with Pass labs (Kent English), th...
SST Son of Ampzilla II/Thoebe II
Both the 225 and Pass xa.8 series are colder (more neutral) than the SOA 2000 and Pass AX,5 that I own.If the SOA II is like the 225 and Pass Xa,8 it is colder! They should have compared the SOA II to the Pass XA30.5 that they also reviewed. Also th...

SST Son of Ampzilla II/Thoebe II
I read the 6 Moons review, and the opinion is that the SOA II is colder than the Pass XA30.8.I have owned the original GAS Son of Ampzilla and like the SOA 2000 was warm, smooth and "tube like".I also owned the Pass Labs XA30.5 which was very warm...

They were designed after James Bongiorno died. The only SST Bongiorno designs in production now are the Apmzilla 2000 Mono Blocks and Ambrosia preamp.I own the SST Son of Ampzilla 2000 power amp, his last, which is very good IMO.SST is owned by Cul...

Disturbing "Sonic Trend" showing up on SOTA audio
I am taking about gear prior to 2000, compared to 2015. Before the absurdly priced gear that passes for SOTA today.Vintage gear is before 1980 IMO.And I was talking about most,(not all), current super high priced systems.
ARC Ref 75 vs. Ref 75 SE
BifwynneI have owned, and heard, ARC equipment for 40 years. In the last 10 years ARC has changed the sound, since Johnson passed. The older ARC gear has fans that do not like the current, over over the "Golden Oldies".ARC now uses caps that take an...
