Phono Preamp price range $2000-$4000
I second the Herron VTPH-2. Flies under the radar but is beloved by those who own them. Built like a tank, innovative design, spectacular sound, superior product support. Best of luck in your search.
Suggestions? Tubed linestage pre-amp??
If you can stretch a little I would suggest the Herron VTSP-3A. It would appear to meet your criteria and is an exceptional product. I moved through a number of line stages over the past several years and the Herron is by far the best--it ended my...
High efficiency speakers
Not sure about your price point but you should add Daedalus to your list. I heard the new Muse at CAF this weekend and it was exceptional. He has a number of other medium sized floor standers that are worth a look, including the Athena. All are ve...
Capitol Audio Fest Speakers?
I thought there was some really interesting stuff to see at my first CAF. The vintage equipment and really large horn loaded systems were really fun though I can't imagine actually owning something like that I didn't always find the sound compelli...
$10K or less speakers for 20x20 rm with open back
I forgot to mention that I did audition the Aerial 7's (not T) many years ago and it was a very good speaker when provided enough power. The speaker seemed very amp dependent so system matching was important but when set up properly they sounded v...
$10K or less speakers for 20x20 rm with open back
I'll be hanging with Lou in the Daedalus room on Saturday at CAF and agree that these are worth having a listen if you are at the show. He will have the Ulysses and the new Muse--not sure I understand your room configuration based on your OP so ha...
JA Perspecitve Stereophile review
By modern Stereophile standards I consider the review an outright pan. These are speakers that apparently could not be made to sound good in Lichte's room, had a tweeter that failed and needed to be replaced and then performed unevenly in Atkinson...
To all that worked in audio salons.
I lived in DC when I got started in this mess (mid 1980s) and I remember going to Excaliber in Alexandria with a freshly printed copy of Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" LP to hear a CJ PV7 I had the hots for. The salesperson, who had never ...
$8000 budget on Pre-amp
I would suggest you take a look at the Herron VTSP-3AR02. I had several Audio Research (SP16 and LS26) and Modwright (LS36.5 and LS100) preamps prior to acquiring the Herron and the VTSP-3AR02 represented a significant step upwards from these well...
Ssssh, is your tube preamp really that quiet?
I have very efficient speakers and went through a number of tube preamps which had varying degrees of noise before settling down with the Herron VTSP-3A (R02). It is not only super quiet but also a very convincing performer across the board.
Daedalus Audio Vs. Kef
I agree with Jazdoc. I own Daedalus speakers but have no experience with the Kef's. However, you have cited tone and dynamics as being two areas where you would like to see improved performance. These happen to be two areas where the Daedalus spea...
advice on dedicated line
Very informative thread and a model for how this forum should operate. I am no expert on this but I have to agree that one dedicated line should be plenty for your (and most other) systems. As has been stated, running a single line avoids a host o...
Harbeth sound with high wife acceptance factor?
I was the happy owner of a pair of C7s for many years--great speakers. The only other speaker that I have heard that is as "right" sounding are the Daedalus. I would suggest you take a look at the Athena's--a moderately sized floor stander that is...
DAEDALUS AUDIO ATHENAS VS DEVORE FIDELITY O/96
I've been a Daedalus owner since 1998 moving from the original DA-1's to fully updated DA-1.1s (AP crossovers and, recently, V2 upgrades). I have not heard the DeVore O96's but have heard both the Gibbon's and the Silverback's (with Shindo electro...
Solid State to replace Audio Research REF110?
I have owned a number of ARC amps but all solid state. Having said that one amp that has not been mentioned which may be worth considering is the Modwright KWA150SE. I own one and it is a terrific amp which has many tube like characteristics (good...
