Cartridge for Empire 698 turntable
One of the best cartridge matches for the 698 is the Empire 4000 DI, DII, or DIII cartridges. Many 698's came equipped with the 4000 DII when sold new. The only difference between the three versions is the compliance of the cantilever suspension, ...
Need help RCA Interconnects but new Balanced Gear
As you may already know, balanced cables have two conductors plus a shield and single-ended cables have one conductor and use the shield as the negative conductor. RCA to XLR adapters with your single ended cables will not allow your differentiall...
XLR or RCA?
****************02-23-14: FerrellmsFor long runs, rule of thumb being 50 feet, XLR will pick up less interference (less noisy), but in general there will be no real (measurable), as opposed to perceived, (subjective) difference. *****************T...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hi Pryso,What you have there is a Genuine Empire 4000D/III Gold. Every detail you list supports this, without exception. The Gold was one a few "late" Empires to have the solid-block mount instead the spring clip. No confusion over the correct car...

Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lewm,My experience is that the 4000D cartridges came from Empire with different height clips. Other owners have verified this as well. I added pics of my 4000D/III with the "correct" high loft clip and also the "incorrect" low loft clip to my Agon...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hi Lewm, If the second link in my post above not work for you, try going to the Audiokarma Turntable forum and search for a thread called "anyone else running vintage Empire carts?". It is still an active thread so you should find it in the first ...
Best mm cart for VPI scout/jmv-9 memorial arm
Oh yeah, and break in the new cables for at least 72 hours using the repeat function on your CDP, preferably with a test CD that has a "burnin" track. The voltage signal from your cartridge is so low that it will never adequately break in the phon...
Best mm cart for VPI scout/jmv-9 memorial arm
You need to know the capacitance of the wire, the lower the better. Stay away from standard interconnect for tonearm cables. The capacitance of standard interconnect can be very high and will restrict the high frequency response of your cartridge....
Best mm cart for VPI scout/jmv-9 memorial arm
FWIW, years ago, at the suggestion of Mike at VPI, I bought a Grado "The Reference" low-output MI cartridge for my JMW12 arm. The cartridge was not a good match, causing constant woofer pumping (a sure sign of a cartridge compliance/tonearm mass m...

Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
The 4000D bodies are the same between the D/I, DII, DIII. All of the authentic S4000D styli have the same "4 Dimensional" nude diamond tip (Empire's version of the Shibata-type profile) and a long, tapered aluminum cantilever, the difference betwe...
Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer V Fozgometer
1stump: Like you, I found myself "wandering in the dark" on azimuth adjustment before using the Fozgometer. I guess that I have not yet developed the "magic eye/ear dexterity" to find the sweet spot manually like many claim to. The Fozgometer made...
Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer V Fozgometer
Don_c55,I have only had the Fozgometer for one week so I have not yet had the chance to experiment with other settings based on listening. What I can say at this point is that the reproduction quality I am hearing after adjustment with the Fozgome...
Clearaudio Azimuth Optimizer V Fozgometer
Don_c55,I did the same gig with the bubble level on the headshell for a long time. Got a Fozgometer for Christmas and when I checked it using the AP Test LP, the measured azimuth was way off. I thought my rig sounded great before, but once adjuste...
