Do I need a machine to clean ?
Well you can argue all day about what method of cleaning is the most effective, but I personally bought a VPI 16.5, which is a semi-automaic machine. It's effective, simple, and solidly built with quality materials. I like the "semi-automatic" bec...
"must have" accessories for TT and LP?
I have the Decca 2+2 brush as well as a Hunt EDA and I prefer the Decca. A spare belt is a good thing to have around, if it's not a DD 'table, obviously. Make sure you check the belt periodically to make it sure it's doing OK. This seems to get ov...
What have I done to my Gyro bearing?
Thanks for the quick responses, I greatly appreciate them! The Gyro is functioning properly now, with good speed and the bearing is working smoothly. I will be keeping a close eye (and ear) on it, however, to be sure there is no unusual behavior w...
Turntable suggestions
Hmmmm...I've found Michell Tecnodec with an RB250 arm (you can easily mod the 250 later if you're so inclined), VPI HW-19 Jr. (also easy to upgrade later) or Nottingham Horizon are also all good turntables around that price. Music Hall MMF7's dece...
Where R U?????
Oshkosh, Wisconsin-- "the beat to hell boombox with wires hanging out the back" capital of Wisconsin ;)No high end shops to be found and I've yet to meet an audiophile here. Most people around here can't fathom the idea that I have a $3K turntable...
Phono preamp Q re: Technics SL-1900 turntable
NAD or Rotel; I've seen the Rotels go used for $100; if he wants to spend a little more, I agree that a used Grado would be a good choice, and it would last through some upgrades if he was so inclined.
Dealing with an unstable, vibrating wood floor...
Actually I got to thinking, ideally what I'd like to do is put the rack up against the wall with the rear spikes removed, and put up at the top rear of the rack--this way the rack would be coupled to the wall by two spikes and to the floor by the ...
Dealing with an unstable, vibrating wood floor...
Thanks for all the very informative advice! I will try to move the rack towards the outside wall where there is indeed less movement; my main problem is, the wall is lined with huge windows with radiators between them :( It's really a bizzarre apa...
VPI HW19 MkIII vs. Michell Gyrodec?

Best cartridge under $450? No Grados please
I think the Clearaudio Aurum Beta and the the S version are excellent carts for the price. My Beta was something like $275--got it for an AR ES-1 and will go on my Gyrodec until I can afford a Koetsu. The woods are very nice as well. I haven't hea...
Back into vinyl - part 1
The 'table in Clockwork Orange was made by our friend John A. recently departed, I'm told :( Curious about the tape deck myself. Hmmm, could that first table have been a model spelled with the sixteenth letter of the alphabet, then three? An intere...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
Lots of very nice speakers listed here and I wish I had some of them, but the question is, what speakers have I had for a while that I would still want to keep. Here's a point of view from a ratty young dirty ragamuffin who wandered into an oddbal...
Cartridge Recommendation and Other Issues
In that range, if you don't mind MM, my ears liked the Clearaudio Aurum Beta S, about $400, and the Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood around $650-700To align the cart get yourself an alignment protractor--you can get them anywhere from about $15 to $50 or ...
VPI HW19 MkIII vs. Michell Gyrodec?
Thanks again everyone for the responses, I really do appreciate it and you've helped me get closer to my decision!Given my circumstances, I think a suspended turntable would be right for me, and I still have it between the VPI and the Gyro, though...
VPI HW19 MkIII vs. Michell Gyrodec?
Bombaywalla, thanks for the clarification, I see what you're saying. Yes I'd be a newbie at working with suspended 'tables. Not saying I'm not willing to learn (I am, afterall) just saying I haven't done it. I do have a dealer who is well-versed a...
