Tube Preamp: How many tubes does it take to .................
It also depends on when it was made. If it was in the 1950s or 60s them of course more tubes because that’s the technology of the day. My McIntosh Mx110z has 17 tubes but it’s a pre, phono and tuner and was made circa 1960. My more recent C2300 ha...
Replacement Tubes
+1 @larsman
Add External DAC or Upgrade to a New Streamer / DAC?
I think that you could do either and I was definitely in the camp of just purchasing a new dac when I was ready to upgrade my music streaming. I talked to several people and salespeople when shopping and the hands down recommendation was that a st...
Length of SPDIF cable
I know that Nordost recommends 1.5 m but I haven’t personally heard a difference between 1.5 and 1m. I’m skeptical about these type of things that are not noticeable to your ear. I suppose you could tell a difference if you compare based on measur...
How Do Amps Affect Soundstage?
Amps are the heart of your system, the foundation from which soundstage is developed. A make it or break it kind of thing. An example of amazing soundstage can be heard in vintage quad amps like the 405-2. Among other qualities that may or may not...
MM or MI Cartridge?
I have a Grado reference in one of  my vintage systems. I have it on a AR XA with a Mayware tonearm that I refurbished. It is an outstanding cartridge once you get it dialed with beautiful vocals and surprising bass.
Why is solid state more popular when tubes are better?
+1 @elliottbnewcombjr. Also perhaps reliability, and the type of program material
Would a real butcher block be going to far?
I ordered custom made  (2 shade ) maple blocks from a guy on Etsy. I finished them myself with stain and poly and brass spiked feet for my vintage McIntosh MC30s. They turned out really nice and the whole project was fun to do. I also saved a lot ...
Heavy duty amp stand, Sonic benefits?
Yes, and well isolated from your main rack. I use a mapleshade custom 4in thick maple wood amp stand with spiked footers for my 114lb McIntosh MC 500 and it serves it well.
Is simpler better?
I think you definitely have the right idea with that!
Digital front end upgrade options
Get rid of the computer and get a streamer, the Lumin is a great start!
Buying Used Equipment on the Internet
I do it all the time and yes, it’s can be a crap shoot. The biggest advice I can give you is look at the seller’s history, if there is none or very little forget it. Beware or listings where the gear is shown in a cellphone screen shot. Ask questi...
ROON?
It’s the best of all that’s your music, and then some. It’s catalogues, displays, plays, you can control all of your devices, you can read up on what’s playing the artist and musicians while it’s playing and then some. It’s basically everything ab...
Aidiogon is Da Bomb!
Welcome, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere 😀
So I bought a WallyScope...
+1 on trusting your ears, with so may different variables on each system and components, it’s the only way to fine tune. Trusting your ears, and adjusting things to your liking is a huge part of this hobby.
