Is McIntosh a stepping stone into HI/FI?
Not sure about the comment re the Cambridge Audio gear. The 840E preamp I have sounds much better to my ears than a lot Mac gear I have heard. To me, Mac is like Mercedes. Great engineering, build quality, CS etc. and a high price point. But a per...
Adcom GFA-5802 -vs- Parasound HCA-3500 Amps?
Sean:Your point about "dual mono" is well taken. Look at another excellent Parasound design, the 2200ii. It uses independent torrodial transformers, one for each channel. After the transformers, the power supplies are completely separate. The only ...
What about a fan blowing over McIntosh 7205 AMP?
Not sure about Macs, but Parasound amps always sound better with higher bias. Makes them Class A to a bit higher power level. Heating is a necessary evil, but high temps are not if you add external cooling.
Pass Labs XP-10 vs Parasound JC-2
The gain was inhttp://www.passlabs.com/pdfs/product_lit/xp-preamp-lit.pdfa pre-amp literature document. Maybe out of date info. I spoke with one of the design engineers at Pass Labs and he stated the gain is closer to 9 dB, which matches what you ...
Pass Labs XP-10 vs Parasound JC-2
I got 7.5 dB from the manuals on Pass Labs web site. They state both the XP 10 and XP 20 gain as 7.5 dB. Maybe old specs, but if so they should update their published info.
Pass Labs XP-10 vs Parasound JC-2
Thanks. You are suggesting I mail order both and return the one I don't like? Interesting, as I did not consider this. But you're right, Audio Advisor just told me I can audition the JC2 for 30 days and return it if I am not satisfied.
Pass Labs XP-10 vs Parasound JC-2
I found an earlier thread comparing the JC2 to the XP-20, and they favored the JC-2. I think I like the attenuator on the XP-10 (more precise digital steps as opposed to a motorized pot on the JC-2), but the XP-10 may not have enough gain for my s...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
George:Interesting concept, but what about the distortion of these devices as shown in the Silonex data? .1% THD is not low these days, particularly if you listen to folks like Nelson Pass. I know you will say there are a lot of tube equipment tha...
tv as a pre-amp?
Were you using the Adcom preamp to listen to the TV before it failed? If so, I doubt if the audio quality will be much different with the TV amps driving the power amp. But, I would be careful that the TV did not blow your preamp with turn on/off tr...
Know of any true bullet proof equipment stories?
Bumped into one of my B&W 804s while vacuuming one day. It dropped like a rock and hit my carpeted floor with a major THUD. I thought, my G*D, that's it, the drivers are toast. Fired up my system to listen and drivers worked no problem. Now I ...
What about a fan blowing over McIntosh 7205 AMP?
I have used those ultra quiet 120 mm PC fans to cool a number of power amps I own. I have cooled Parasound JC-1s and A21s by mounting the fan under the top cover plate, blowing out. These fans are so quiet you cannot hear them with your head right...
Appreciate recommendations for SS preamp purchase
I have a Cambridge Audio 840E preamp, which you can find used for under $1000. Am pleasantly surprised at how nice and clean this pre-amp sounds. Those Terrapin modules and the discrete resistor/relay attenuator work quite well.
