Tubes Versus Solid-State Audio Amps—The Last Word
A nice try, but way too simplistic. Esp the handling of passive components like resistors and caps. No one has used MLCC caps or carbon composition resistors in analog audio since the 70's.
Krell preamp / Parasound amp power up issue
You might also check that the surge current limiters in the A21 are OK. These are supposed to limit the inrush of current to the main power supply capacitors during turn on. Not sure about the A21, but the early design JC1s typically have surge cu...
Can fuses go bad?
Pryso:Looks like one of your amps has the replacement. The new parts are larger and thicker (and black in color). The originals were arranged by two parallel pairs in series. They are all replaced by one single part (although I used two of the lar...
Locating capacitors
Steakster:I would choose the cap based on operating temp (105C preferred over 85 C), then the lowest ESR (equivalent series resistance), then finally ripple current (highest best). Load life is generaly the life of the capacitor operated at a give...
Can fuses go bad?
I would also check those surge current limiters, esp if you have an older production JC1. They are on the AC input board and look like large green capacitors. The older design has four of them clustered together. These can "current hog" and burn o...

At that capacitance you might also be able to find a polypropylene film type. It will be a larger and more expensive, but sonically a vast improvement. And those will be radial so they may not fit as well.

If you are at a loss, you can contact Soundsmith in NY. I think they repair the vintage B&O stuff.
RFI noise/ FM overlay Any way to eliminate it?
You live only a mile away from a transmitting tower AND in a high rise apartment. Can you see the tower from your apartment? If so, you have direct line of sight beaming of high powered RF into your apartment. If its a high power radio station, no ...
Speaker spikes on concrete or wood floor best?
Studiosoundman:A lot of what you say makes sense, and I found that the simple steel spikes that come stock on the B&W 803d to be essentialy useless. But I might not have discovered this had I not had the problem of the stock spikes penetrating...
Phono Section, Preamp, gain matching for noise
Captain Winters:Yes, I was thinking about your measurements, and at 55 dB SPL you are nearing ambient levels, depending of course on your house and environment. If you are picking up ambient contributions, your baseline noise floor of your audio s...

Axials are especially hard to find current replacements for. Most all the new designs are radial (with the leads coming out of the same end). Axials the leads come out of opposing ends.I think Vishay makes a line of current axial electrolytics (yo...
Relocating power transformer in PS Audio GCPH
M297904:Yes, the outboard capacitance is about 2.75x the stock level of 48,000 mfd (which is also quite a lot for a pre-amp).Re the Underwood mods, I could not really see what "input resistors" they were replacing, as all the passive components (e...
Relocating power transformer in PS Audio GCPH
Swanny:I sent an email to your address. Did you get it?For pics maybe I can post something on vinyl engine, if you guys subsrcibe to that forum.
General comments on SOTA
I have always been interested in SOTA vacuum hold down technology. When I was first exposed to their product back in the 80's, I think that was their claim to fame, so to speak. Now I notice they have a line of non-vacuum versions that use traditio...
Phono Section, Preamp, gain matching for noise
Captain Winters:Re your question of acceptable levels, this is a bit subjective. For me, -60 dB would not be good enough, as I can easily hear this level from my listening position at the highest sound levels I listen to.You can check out my post ...
