Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Today I received the repaired M320 from Axel. He straightened the armature tabs and replaced the suspension. No retip was needed. So it will be about comparing a refreshed M320 to NOS M420 and M415.

I agree with the last three posts. Just as important as reaching consensus on shared LPs for test purposes, the broad dissemination of Acutex 4XX cartridges from the italian seller into this group presents an opportunity to adjudge tonearms and an...

BTW, the unusual construction of the M320 stylus suggests that preserving the armature tabs requires slipping a tube cantilever retip over the existing armature sleeve. I can't imagine how an entirely new cantilever could be fitted to the stylus h...

Dear Tubed1, my used M320III STR came with an original stylus with a bent cantilever armature tab. If you have a M320, you know that the design is unconventional, with two armature tabs at the hinge of the cantilever that project perpendicularly d...

Ry Cooder's Election Special. Kudos to Cooder(and Guthrie and Thompson before him) for taking on "the bastards." In this and the last album he has evolved compositionally and vocally, with much more vocal authority than on the early albums. Some g...

While we're onto Acutexes again, I'll add that I'm running in an M415 after 100 hours with the M420. The 420 was very addictive. Like most addictions the stimulation may be due to an additive substance. In this case(rest assured for purpose of ana...

Slaw, IME on Trans-Fi linear tonearm the M420 STR's sibilance gradually resolves over 50-75 hrs. What little remains of it thereafter is an acceptable compromise, considering the eyes-wide-open performance that communicates everything that's great...

Dear Raul,Gordon Holt really liked that MC2000:http://www.stereophile.com/phonocartridges/ortofon_mc-2000_mc_phono_cartridge/index.htmlHowever, in the mid-80s he considered it high praise that the MC2000 made LPs sound like CDs. How the ear has ev...
APO Doors Reissues
I'm very much enjoying the largely over-looked 2011 40th Aniversary three-sided Rhino LP release of LA Woman Workshop Sessions. The alternate takes are good, and what a meaty beaty bouncy working session with excellent SQ:"Dear Doors fans, here we...
Jack White Promoting Vinyl
Looking at the Sea of Cowards LP, there does appear to be a small ring of what may be grooves underneath both labels. It would require a butcher job to uncover it. Buried treasure or bone-head, Jack?IMO SQ is excellent on most of his LPs.

Beach House fans might also try their earlier "Teen Dream." Great that Freedy Johnson is back.

The replacement caps appear to be Russian K40Y9 PIO and Russian green ones whose nomenclature escapes my memory. The NOS Russians are generally good caps, but may or may not be better than the factory originals.

Dear Raul, As the Technics EPC-300 has an elliptical stylus(albeit on a titanium cantilever), I figured that a used example would be an interesting candidate a line contact retip by Axel. Perhaps this will take it to "better than new" performance ...

Thanks, Frogman, I'll give it a try. I only asked for its resistance over length to get a general sense of whether such fine filament wire makes sense for a long run. Obviously typical phono applications enlist tonearm wire for the short run from ...

Frogman, I have been thinking of trying that AN tonearm wire. Do you use it in a long uninterrupted run from cartridge to phono stage, or in a short run to a connector block on the tonearm? The AN wire is lighter gauge than the screened silver wir...
