Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
This was the most interesting post I found on my journey to XSV-3000. http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=19899This is authored by the ex-Stanton exec, who also mentions that the XUV-2500 with 2500Q stylus were inferior first-generation...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lew, Bluz Broz has NOS S1000ZE/X-ERD stylus. I was lucky to score one for far less on eBay, which I will soon fit to a 999 body.As there is much on other forums about Stanton/Pickering, I thought it would be interesting to compare one to some of t...
Soundsmith's turnaround time?
Tpreaves, This is certainly true. However IMO it is most important to know that Soundsmith is a clean and straight and reasonably priced service and that the customer is eventually satisfied. One occasionally encounters shady operators in audio, a...
Soundsmith's turnaround time?
Al, mine was finished at 7 mos. after many fruitless queries. The cartridge was finished the day after I requested return of the cartridge finished or unfinished. The work was good, but obviously it is possible to get buried in the backlog. Readin...

Hi Raul, please repost the link to the replacement Azden stylus. The link that you posted points to your c: drive. After around 75 hours of break-in Azden really got religion. Any perception of treble lift and diffuse LF has resolved into a neutral...
Review: RAM Modified Marantz SA-7S1 CD Player
I incorporated many of Kyle's ideas and piece parts into my modified SCD-1. This DIY project unfolded gradually over several years, in the course of which I got to know Kyle fairly well. As you indicate, he is a thoughtful & honest pro who fre...
The pivoted arm experiment is over
Frogman, I agree. It is always surprising how obvious a single variable change can be-- particularly at the source.Ddriveman, you may be onto something: Vic of Trans-Fi wrote me that the Decca Reference is his favorite cartridge on Terminator line...
Why terminations on speaker cable?
Makes a difference. I've been using DIY copper foil speaker cables & jumpers with 1/4" punched holes. This works nicely with Cardas no-stress clamp-style binding posts. With Merlin VSM this has eliminated ten solder joints and ten spades per s...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Thanks, got it. It was also helpful to read V. Khomenko's old AA post (which you participated in) and the second URL below (which in a footnote expresses skepticism about the test method using 1kHz tones.)http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/vinyl/mes...

Could you explain that further? I had assumed that cross-talk that varies with physical azimuth adjustment was solely a function of misallignment of stylus angle w/r to grooves.
The pivoted arm experiment is over
MePearson, excellent experiment & review-- which as an owner of both a linear tonearm and VPI TNT I particularly enjoyed. Not to over-complicate things, but I wonder whether some of your satisfaction with a linear arm may owe to arm in context...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lew, neutral as in arm parallel with platter. When setting azimuth with a mirror I am not referencing to the cartridge body. I use enough magnification to sight a straight line through the diamond and its mirror image. Admittedly it takes a bit of ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lew, So far I've been experimenting in a narrow range around neutral VTA and like Azden level or slightly negative. There does not seem to be too much difference +/- a few degrees from neutral VTA. Correct azimuth was more important to eliminate a...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
To points above regarding set-up of Azden YM-P50VL, with my example I found correct azimuth required slightly canted cartridge body. Other MM/MI that I've tried seem less sensitive to azimuth adjustment. This cartridge is more resolving than most ...
Azimuth observations and importance
I use a CD as a mirror, a magnifier with a handle, and Petzl's best head lamp made for night climbing-- all multi-purpose tools that do the job, assuming good eyesight. At close magnification you can see two images of the cantilever down into the ...
