To Buy or to DIY, here is my question
"@chorus I did build some Speakerlab cornerhorns once." Well, building another set will be even easier then.  If you are not buying a DIY kit, paying for plans of a well proven and well tested design helps when the crossover and enclosure sp...
To Buy or to DIY, here is my question
@chorus first step, head over to the DIY forums, very limited experience here.   IF you are an extra-hands-on type person and normally build things yourself at home, with good plan/design/specs, go DIY and build it yourself. Madisound sources spe...
The Best Preamp is no Preamp?
+2 to what @ghdprentice @lowrider57 and others already shared.  And, long listening sessions with a triode based tube preamp can be extra-engaging too. It comes down to what type of sound and presentation you prefer.
B&K EX 4420 vs B&K EX 4420 reference
Spare right & left circuit boards would be nice to have. My former EX4420 was a nice sounding amp I enjoyed for over 20+ years. It got rather hot and parts inside degraded over time, hum. Had the boards repaired multiple times until I sold it ...
Swapping Kt88 tubes on muzishare x7 for Kt150
No, not with your X7 I'd suspect.  Stay with KT88s.  Here is why...one other thought.   @hvuck did you happen to notice your X7 amp designed for KT88s weighs 22.5kgs?  Now compare that to the new Muzishare X10 amp designed for KT150s, weighing in...
[Tube Preamp][Need Help]Could you suggest a tube preamp matched with a SS AMP?
@princeliebe Before jumping to the "go integrated" path, is there anything you do not like about the sound of your current pre/amp setup? If anything... ?   -Your M504 amps is no slouch. When they were still made fairly well. -Why do you feel...
McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer
McIntosh makes nice stuff that lasts over decades. They are still in business.  Matching with the right source, speakers, cables, helps make a difference.  Some of their amps can sound nice, particularly for fans of the signature Mc sound.
What Class A is better? SUGDEN FPA-4 or PASS LABS XA-25
@snapoli2 Good for you. While I've never owned a INT-25, the lower wattage amp is nice too, and unless you like to turn it up loud, I'd prefer the lower watt integrated for regular listening levels most of the time anyhow. Yep, speaker pairing well...
What Class A is better? SUGDEN FPA-4 or PASS LABS XA-25
@snapoli2 ...I’ve owned both, multiple pieces. I like Pass Labs allot but ultimately preferred the Sugden iA4 Masterclass - which I did not think would be the case.   Nice. Trust your ears with your speakers as you found out first hand. What s...
The most import design issue for a speaker manufacter how many will fit on a pallet.
Bottom line for them, yes. Does not have to be a limitation for all of us. Not for me. Availability of right-size speakers is what drove me back to designing and building my own custom weighty-built speakers again. Another option is buying from l...
Are Quicksilver power tube amps in the same league as VAC, VTL, BAT, ARC, ...?
@tubegroover What is the secret sauce? My guess and bet is the transformers, isn’t that generally the case in the best tube designs?   Yes, Transformers. +Proven circuit design, no circuit boards, clean point-to-point wiring, careful low-nois...
Which interconnect cable to upgrade first
@xcool ..." I've been thinking about tube preamp for some time, I might give it a try one day."   There is a chance you may decide to change interconnects again if you go with a tube preamp -or- if/when you upgrade tubes later on.
Which interconnect cable to upgrade first
[@xcool] Hey @ghdprentice I remember running the cables 24 hrs straight for 4 or 5 days from my source to my preamp. The preamp was off when I wasn’t listening. I did like a few things about the cable between my source and preamp. Very spacio...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@jjss49 Spot on..Absolutely! :) It’s funny, over several years I focused on both of these instruments when dialing in lowest midrange frequency and bass drivers in my custom speakers. And the same again dialing in more musical subwoofers, finding ...
PSVANE 12Au7 12At7 12Ax7 "-T MKII" 2020 production run of small signal/driver tubes
@milpai   Perfect!  That's plenty of time imo, and yes at least 45 minutes warmup helps getting that torroid transformer in the back and other bits warmed up for the tubes to do their best. Reading up on your Rhumba, the tubes should last a long...
