Integrated Amp - Looking to replace my amp & pre
The Jeff Rowland Design Group's Continuum 500 is an incredible integrated amplifier with one of the best pre-amp stages possible. There's been lots of discussion here on A'gon, so I won't repeat that, but, instead, suggest that you search for revi...
Rowland Continuum 500, RCA vs. XLR
My Playback Designs MPS-5 is "stated to be" fully balanced also. Analysis Plus ICs are about the same in balanced or unbalanced configuration, so it was really just a matter of getting the balanced ICs.Dave
Playback designs followup?
Some readers of this thread may be interested in the thread about the Playback Designs MPS-5 firmware update, as follows:MPS-5 Update Thread
Playback Designs Firmware Update
The update has been updated. This is a story of an unanticipated problem and how the manufacturer quickly rectified it.I installed the update on Saturday morning (for you PD owners it has an "18" in it's file name) and was enjoying the increased b...
New EMM Labs DAC 2 or Accustic Arts Ref Tube DAC
Jason, good stuff.I think that we should seek the highest quality circuit design, whether its tube or SS. Making tubes a litmus test is silly, IMHO. I wouldn't disqualify a circuit just because it has a tube in it, but it would make me suspicious ...
Review: Jeff Rowland Continuum 500 Amplifier
Beautiful review(s) Kiwi. Thanks for linking here. Between our two reviews, that's the most in-depth coverage that the C-500 has received. What I'm about to say is NOT meant as a criticism of your associated equipment, I just think that my equipmen...
Playback designs followup?
Arthurp, you're the one that said "I guess that is why I'm currently on the "Out List" of the Chambers clan." If you want to talk about Modwright and Marantz then do it in the appropriate threads. The fact that you inject yourself into every PD th...
Playback designs followup?
Arthurp, there's a market in modding Marantz because they need it. Ric Shultz and others would probably love to get their hands on a PD and see what he could do, but there's likely very little that they could do, given the programming and design d...
Rowland Continuum 500, RCA vs. XLR
Let's get back to a practical discussion of does it make a difference. I moved from unbalanced to balanced ICs with my C-500 (congrats on you purchase, BTW). My run is only 1-meter, but the CD/SACD player and Rowland are only an inch apart from on...
Playback designs followup?
The Marantz SA7 was in the same system with the PD MPS-5 at the last RMAF. I was in the room several times when we switched between the PD and the Marantz. NOT ONE person preferred the Marantz. When you watched the body langauge of the groups, six...
Playback Designs Firmware Update
Grr6001, thanks for the report. I'll install the update this weekend.Yes, I'm extremely pleased with PD's followup and improving something that was already a strength.Dave
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
My 2009 BMW M3 coupe came out of 2008 bonus money. I put way, way more money in savings than I spent, but we DID buy the car and take a cruise. My 2009 revenue is starting significantly behind the end of 2008 pace, but there's still 10.5 months to...
Playback designs followup?
What I've said in the past still holds. I've compared the MPS-5 directly to the Emm single box solution, the Esoteric multi-box solution, the Marantz S7 and a few other units on a less direct comparison. The MPS-5 is still my favorite in every res...
New Rowland Criterion 2-chassis battery pre
Apparently. I understand that the issues are now restricted totally to the remote's functions.Dave
New Rowland Criterion 2-chassis battery pre
Husk1, no pressure. ;-)Macrojack, the gizmo factor is low for me, but the thought of retiring my Continuum 500 and going the Criterin/312 route has crossed my mind. I think that the sound is going to be THAT good. Diminishing returns, for sure. Th...
