Proceed PAV as a two channel preamp..
You need to remember that a major price factor when the PAV was new is that it had SOTA video switching that is now mostly obsolete. IIRC, Stereophile claimed it would be rated B as an audio preamp, whereas it was rated A as an AV processor. I tho...
Proceed PAV as a two channel preamp..
I have a Proceed PAV and a PAV/PDSD pair. The PAV is analog, the PDSD digital. They need to be purchased as a pair for surround sound. The sound quality is excellent. You may be able to have a PAV repaired by other than Harmon, even locally. My un...
7.1 speaker placement
There is so little value to rear surrounds that I wouldn't, and in fact, don't bother. My rear speakers are 9' behind the main listening area and driven by very good amplifiers that I rarely power up. I also removed the center channel, so I usuall...
What Exactly Does "Burn In" do for Electronics?
From a teleological point of view, it makes great sense for our auditory system to be good at classifying sounds while ignoring minor differences. You needed to know if a predator or something to eat is is nearby. It wouldn't have served our survi...
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
It's been years since I've seen the Ayre, so I rely on photos. I think both the Ayre and Sony are handsome in a functional minimalist way, neither manufacturer seems to have squandered money on bling.I just received a Linn SACD sampler that reinfo...
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
the case is actually not that fancyThe case appears less fancy that that of my Sony XA5400ES, so I hope the sound is sufficiently superior to compensate for such a plain-jane appearance. I expect to experience that sound myself if I find one for n...
Help with processor decision
Jdub39,Perhaps it's the writing style: "l also use the 7.1 analog rca inputs but only the fR/FL but very very seldom as I prefer the sound of the XLR connection (regardless of what Oppo says)And lastly I use hdmi for all multi/ch material movies &...
Help with processor decision
Jdub39,I obviously don't understand what you're try to achieve. I'm pretty confident you don't need to use XLR unless the Oppo is distant from the 8801 and that the 8801 should not digitize analog from the Oppo. According to Oppo, there is no soni...
Help with processor decision
Jdub,Three? Analog from the Oppo direct to the amp and HDMI-2 from the Oppo to the 8801 would seem sufficient. I hope you don't take analog from the Oppo to the 8801 and digitize it again. Or do you take analog from the Oppo to an 8801 passthrough...
Help with processor decision
Bebop, you don't need to use XLR to use the Oppo DACs. Consult the manual about optimizing stereo. At the bottom of the Audio Processing menu set Stereo Signal to Front Left/Right. Use the LR stereo outputs, either XLR or SE, and take the surround...
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
In looking at photos taken at the Newport Beach show on the Asylum web, especially those of turntable and speakers, I wondered if there is a market for that stuff or are they vanity products much like books written to satisfy the authors' ego. Art...
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
Tarp38,The mechanicals may be Pioneer, but the electronics that get superb analog out the door are from Charles Hanson et al., and I suspect the cost is in that design genius and the selection of components. Yesterday, someone whose audio judgment...
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
IIRC, I read that the mechanicals are Pioneer, and that Ayre has stocked backup units for meeting future service needs.db
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
I have an Oppo 105 in addition to the Sony XA5400ES, Tarp38. Both are connected via analog to a Parasound JC-2 that feeds Proceed HPA amps that drive a pair of KEF Reference 107/2s. The surround channels of the Oppo go directly to the amps.db
Ayre C-5xe-mp v Sony XA5400ES
I realize I left out a referent to he. It's John Atkinson. I'm likely to buy a used Ayre if I can find one under $3K.db
