Where is the problem? Tracking error?
You may just need to work on your cartridge alignment, VTA, azimuth, and tracking force. Start with VTA as neutral as possible and then adjust up or down. Tracking force should start at the high end of the manufacturer's recommended range.I've hea...
Using XLR for Phono out
I'd get a pair of XLR cables from monoprice.com and try it out.
New TT-- new problem
"Davers--how do you change the capacitive load in such cases? I assume you're thinking of being able to switch the load on your phone section. But mine doesn't have adjustable settings. Is there another way?"Unfortunately, most phono sections have...
New TT-- new problem
I have no experience with the Soundsmith moving iron carts, but for MM carts, changing the capacitive load, even within the "acceptable" range specified by the manufactuer, can greatly change the frequency response. Apart VTA, azimuth, and alignme...
New TT-- new problem
Have you tried the phono section in the Rotel just to have a reference?I would give the cart about 20 hours of break in...if the sound has some promise. As for the phono IC, I'd only worry about the capacitance it adds to the total load on the cart...
Converting Vinyl to digital
"Great analogue sound is never reproduced from a CD"My Lp rips to CD sound just as good if not better than my Lps. I can turn my amp off during recording to avoid acoustic feedback and also run digital click removal software on the rips.I get exce...
Arm upgrade for Gyrodec SE, could use some help
I started out with an Incognito rewired RB300 on my Gyrodec and moved to a used SME309. The SME is much more refined and quiet, but the RB300 had a certain beefy, solid quality that I can imagine some people preferring. I paid $1100 for the 309 an...

What is the best Software to Digitize LP's?
I'm very happy with ClickRepair. All it does is remove ticks, pops, and crackle, it's not a general noise reduction tool.
Stereo Separation - Turntable
I would trust your ears on this one. You don't need to go moving your speakers around. Hard panning of instruments to left, right, and center was very common in the early stereo era.
Stereo Separation - Turntable
I mean early stereo Jazz recordings, of course.
Stereo Separation - Turntable
This is typical of some early Jazz recordings. The CD may have been remixed.
Harshness/Distortion Question - Newbie
Yeah, gotta clean that stylus. I use a dry Discwasher stylus brush before every play (let the stylus rest on the bristles and use only back to front motion), and occaisonally the Onzo Zerodust gel. No liquids. For the records, I use an Audioquest c...
Lacking Soundstage - Vandersteen 2C
Heavy wool drapes on that window may help. Wool army blankets are useful for experimenting. Are you sure you can't do long wall placement? Your listening position would be close to the back wall with this placement, so you'd need to treat the wall ...
Harshness/Distortion Question - Newbie
Vinyl is quite capable of reproducing the sound of harsh master tapes, some pressings are just harsh sounding, and some cartridges are quite capable of producing harsh sounds all on their own. Hanaleimike's advice is solid. If tweaking cartridge s...
