Two Cables From One?
I think your best bet is to start from scratch with an all DIY cable building project.  There are plenty of sources for materials and construction methods out there.  Once you've created your perfect length set, no one can tell you it isn't great ...
Anyone dislike Ohm Walsh speakers?
I have no skin in this game, but I always loved the F back in the day. I didn’t work for TechHiFi but against them…or I would certainly have gotten a pair!  The current Ohms are different in design than Fs, with batting on 90 degrees to make them ...
Magnepan service shut down
Their production manager quit and they are struggling to pick up the slack. Their business model is not sustainable. LRSs are so underpriced it creates artificially elevated demand and upsets the whole operation. Nothing that can’t be solved if th...
HiFi vs MidFi
As an industry lifer since 1973 with more experience in "mid-fi" than I care to admit, I define the term by recognizing the following:  Mid-Fi is not made by a brilliant but misunderstood savant designer...it's made by an industrial manufacturer w...
what's going on with specs?
If you’re discussing Watts, the room size, its acoustic liveness, and most importantly YOU and your musical choices and volume demands all matter in determining how much amp you want. SS amps generally have low output impedance and ones on your li...
Why do amplifiers sound different?
OP has a depth of understanding comparable to that of Julian Hirsch in 1970.  Since then a lot has arisen to pique the curiosity of both listeners and amp designers. The effect of global feedback was illustrated by Matti Ottala. Richard Marsh publ...
How much does power amplifier really matter comparing to other hi-fi components?
No opinion can be ventured without an overall budget. Can you spend $10K?  Credible products are available in each area for $2K to $3K. If that’s a stretch are you handy?  DIY options are out there. Don’t neglect your room furnishings and speaker ...
Interesting experience with two very different speaker designs
I am a believer that you start with your room.  If you have a nice big bounded rectangular space with which to work, big planar or open back speakers can really shine.  More confined by room size and asymmetric room openings, etc?  Don’t even thin...
Integrated amp recommendation for Focal 1038
Nobody mentioned the Rogue Audio Pharaoh. With a tube preamp, MC gain, and ample SS power, that would be an excellent fit for the OP.
Matching cartridge to phono pre amp. pF!?
Lewm and bpoletti have it exactly right. Capacitive loading is the sum of the capacitances of the tonearm’s internal wiring, the output cable, and the phono stage input capacitance. If Lehmann BC has 100 pF and your table has 150, not an unlikely ...
fisher stereo
Hate to be a downer but…as rar1 suggested, I’d be shocked if that item has as much as 5W @ 10% THD. Those ‘70s compact systems were not all that good. Don’t expect too much. KLH made pretty good ones, but Fisher, not so much.
What type of preamp do I use for an Electret stylus ?
Tech HiFi sold a lot of MA carts in the ‘70s and ‘80s. They work with a 47kOhm 42dB gain preamp and they aren’t capacitive load sensitive either.
Turntable versus tonearm versus cartridge: which is MOST important?
OP's question is purposely obtuse, as kingbarbuda points out.  Any real buyer would really ask "How do I apportion my $10.5K bundle to get the best sounding set?".  In that case there are environmental considerations to consider in the choice of t...
You own a store, you sell 2 brands, which?
McIntosh and JBL because together you can make great stereo and home theater systems. I’m including Synthesis by JBL. Both brands are $$MONEY$$!!
Commander Cody
Fun stuff…CC brought joy humor and fine musicianship together and helped preserve a tradition of Texas Swing and Rockabilly for his generation. In countless local joints bands inspired by the LPA would entertain and delight. In Boston we had Memph...
