How do you arrange the order of your records?
I have only 2 categories….Classical, and Everything Else. Classical is alphabetical by composer, with solo instrumental followed by chamber, concertos, symphonies, choral/oratorio/opera for each composer.  EE is by band name or artist last name, ...
My Ayre AX-7e Integrated amp vs. an upgrade to the Ayre EX-8 Integrated amplifier
Tivo buys an IR code library from UEI most likely.  A lot of "boutique" high end brands pay little attention to such matters.
Upgrade path question with $2k to spend
If your system is 2.1 or 2.0 it has no business incorporating an AV receiver...preriod(s).  I fully support blended systems using an AV receiver for center and surrounds, with a good dedicated integrated amp in HT Bypass mode for the main speakers...
Can a great system make a mediocre recording sound good?
When I got into this as a teen, 50+ years ago, I was exploring the Chess Real Folk Blues catalog.  Howling Wolf was a favorite...not for the "sound" but for the musical intensity.  I listened on Sennheiser HD414s then...very peaky and edgy on thos...
recommended oil for well tempered spindle cup
Since the WT spindle bearing is continuously self lubricating, Bill Firebaugh's statement that viscosity within the range given is non-critical can be taken at face value.  Every intant the platter is spinning, the delrin contact bearings are seei...
The best way to start adding A=analog to my system
I have used a Well Tempered TT/TA for 35 years and only now am considering replacing it. Not many products give lasting satisfaction like that. Give them a look. One thing about theirs is I have never had a static pop in all those years. Before, w...
Connecting monoblock tube amps to single subwoofer.
If hilde’s suggestion doesn’t pan out you could always follow REL’s advice and get another T5/x.  They repeatedly advocate for 1 sub per amp.  Also, what is your preamp?  Does it have a summed mono line output? You shouldn’t just Y-connect stereo ...
Current Questions
I remember looking t the curlicue plots of phase angle in Audio...couldn't interpret what they meant worth a da**!  Ditto Stereophile's phase angle overlays on their impedance curves.  Anyway, those Krell amps sure had some bass.  Since many Class...
Current Questions
GS5 etc., your answer begins to explain why high current amplifiers tend to cost more and are less commonly found in mid-fi…they require larger transformers and more storage capacity.  I believe Krell was first to go for broke in this area. How d...
Cassette decks. How good can it get?
I am a fan of the better 2 head single capstan machines like the MR2.  The dual capstan models tapes sound great played back on the same machine, but not so good on others due to the inability to duplicate the alignment imposed by the Nak mechanic...
God doesn't need to know what time it is.
On the Ry Cooder sub-convo, and in connection to the “Clapton is God” graffiti, RC played the sweet Tele slide guitar for the soundtrack of the movie “Crossroads” in opposition to Stevie Vai’s demonic metal shredding in the final shoot-out between...
Used amps, how to tell if,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Are there any reliable high end repair shops in your area?  Why not ask a tech if they have reconditioned amps that fit your needs. Boomers are dropping like flies if you haven’t noticed and their survivors are disposing of their antique stereos a...
Is it me? Will I ever be satisfied?
I would ask just what are you listening to to judge how good your system is?  If you were born in 1944 is your reference point mid-60’s jazz and classical, or Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane?  Either way, I would want more speaker than your 8...
MC901 monoblock tube matching Q
My understanding is all Mac tube amps use a biasing system that obviates the need for matching either power tubes or pre-drivers.  But sourcing your tubes from them should be the safe bet. If their parts guy doesn’t inspire confidence, ask one of ...
90% loss of one speaker volume.
Does this speaker have a protection circuit of some kind that may just need a reset?  Ohm can answer that one.
