Soldering Help
I learned to solder by building Dynakits. My first one was constructed with a Radio Shack 25w pencil iron, a Swiss Army knife and a pair of needle nose pliers. When done, it worked!  Today you can build an Akitika GT-102 and have a nice medium pow...
Beautiful Music That Reduce You To Tears
Despite my self-given username I am a sentimental softy where music is concerned. Some of my trigger songs or compositions: Schubert String Quintet in C Chopin Prelude in Gm Mozart Clarinet Quintet K581 I’ve Got A Mind To Give Up Living; Paul ...
Why recordings made before 1965 sound better.
Hypoman nailed it. I once shared a house with an amateur recordist who recorded a local orchestra for his own personal library of master tapes. He used a Nakamichi Tri-mic setup with CP1 omni capsules, a Revox A77 and a DBX compander. Those tapes ...
How to tame a bright system?
I would advise you to take painter24’s advice and contact GR Research about their upgrade kit for the 606S2.  Then I’d focus on speaker placement, make sure you have properly damped stands, and treat the room for early reflections, if that applies...
The response for REL regarding subwoofers
Seems to me the answer is simply to use an amp for the Khorns that has an input level control to attenuate its gain to the desired level to match the gain characteristics of your sub. Then use a preamp with sufficient output voltage to drive the s...
The Decware Pill - Any Experiences?
Sounds like something you might put in a tape loop for occasional use. Not all digital sounds the same, so I wouldn’t want a filter in line between the DAC and preamp.
Audioquest speaker cables
Auxinput is right on the main point...better to go with single wire WT and upgraded jumpers than RH Combo, but wrong on the detail about how AQ works in the Folk Heros range...the Combo is in fact a pair of Zeros and a pair of Bass in parallel.  T...
Why do all Mahler recordings seem too bright?
Listen to the Ben Zander/ Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra recordings of the 6th and the 9th.  Recorded live in Boston Symphony Hall, with, to my ears, no EQ or compression.  Multi miked but mixed to a very naturalistic stereo.  Sounds great on...
Best light weight full range speaker recommendation.
What I'd like to know is what is the reason the OP wants a light weight?   If by full range he means no sub needed, that's a tough nut to crack. Inert cabinets with large or multiple woofers tend to be quite hefty. One brand that gets low colorati...

Is pre-out the same ?
Since you haven’t mentioned the make and model integrated you have all we can go on are general rules of thumb, like the 10:1 ratio. If there is a mismatch the specific result is a roll off of bass response, but even integrated amps’ pre-outs if t...
What song have you played the most?
I turn 70 this month, and I’ve probably played ‘Uncle John’s Band’ more than any other individual song, but Little Feat ‘All That You Dream’, and Hendrix ‘Hey Baby’ come close. So does ‘Cut Across Shorty’ by Rod Stewart.
Why do my bass drivers shake violently listening to vinyl
The OP is experiencing an undamped medium mass arm with a too-compliant cartridge in combination with vented speakers. A stiffer suspension cart, sealed box speakers, a viscous damped arm…any will stop excess sub-bass from causing woofer oscillati...
Whether to do anything about the limitations of our ears
As a young person with healthy, maybe above average hearing acuity I would encounter older folks with declining acuity and thought that whatever their hearing filter was, they perceived live music through it and reproduced music through it too, so...
