Cost break down of hifi system
First, listen to a lot of systems and think about what you are hearing. 1) Speakers first, at least 90dB; high sensitivity will give you a wider and generally less expensive choice of amps and preamps. 2) Get tubes in the line somewhere, preamp ...
Preamps can color sound considerably. Surprising?
scm: Thanks re Tortuga LDR, I'll try to listen to it sometime. But it needs external power, and so it is not truly passive. I have a 12 VDC battery-powered Dodd Audio preamp which is not passive, but it's absolutely silent. Can you switch the Tort...
Preamps can color sound considerably. Surprising?
I've tried many passive preamps, thinking "that must be the answer". It isn't--they  are all dry and flat. IMHO if you want liquid transparent sound and emotion from your music there must be tubes somewhere in the system. Even PSAudio--prime lover...
Bragging rights.....
Ditto for bondman re the potential need to change the entire audio unit if you change speakers. For my system, which includes tubes, I need to push four "on" buttons and wait two minutes for warm-up while I'm deciding what to play. That's immeasur...
$5K DAC OPTIONS
I recommend you get a DAC with 12S input(s).
Atma-Sphere Class D… Amazing
MA-1s/140wpc for $9,800, and Class D/100wpc for $5,400, into Khorns which need only a few watts? Time to be rescued by a less expensive 300B tube amp which sounds very much "like a tube amp"...
Great classical pianists
Oh my o my o my! A full page of arguments and agreements about classical piano masters on Audiogon! Thank you, you made my morning...
Which DACs are known to be sweet/rich/relaxed?
I agree with xboom. First, try playing through a tube preamp.
Any song recommendations for testing purposes?
Yoko Ono. hahaha
Eva Cassiday Blew Me Away with her cover of Wayfaring Stranger....
Eva...Just carries me away!. whart, are you the same Bill Hart who plays regularly at The Velvet Note in Atlanta? Feels good to have you listening as well as playing so well.
The worst sentence in audio writing
I like it when a reviewer commits themselves to what they heard. If I agree, then I'm happy to find agreement, and if I disagree I've learned something, if only the limitations of the reviewer...:) What I don't like is pandering and a lack of clea...
Please recommend speakers
Quad S2. $1,100 new and around $600 used. Tell your wife they are bookshelf speakers, then move them onto side tables and let her discover they sound better that way, and finally put them on stands.
Integrated Amplifiers - Luxman vs Pass Labs
I sold my PASS XA25 and bought an LTA Tube Amp. The Pass is very good, but the LTA puts out a better sound in many ways, for my ears, quite clearly. The LTA has a liquid and transparent midrange, amazing, precise highs (every little tinkle :) and ...
Share albums where EVERY SINGLE song is good
Dear leemaze, I'm an old guy, and my son-in-law keeps me on track with today's music, some of which I like. But what I find weird is that so few here picked Jazz and Classical recordings-- gentlemen, there are so many perfect recordings in those ...
How long do you or should you keep your gear.
I still have the Technics SL-150 turntable with an SME tonearm I bought about 45 years ago. It's still accurate, and still plays beautifully. But everything else in my system has been changed out for the better every decade or so.
