Springs for homemade isolation stand
Placing a 2" thick piece of maple on top of HVAV cork sandwiches (the cork is sandwiched between rubber) works well.
Silver vs Copper cables
I would agree witht he previous post. Silver done right (Ridge Street Audio for example) can sound very good in the right system. I have a mixture of silver (RSAD) and copper (CRL/FIM) ICs in my system and use copper speaker cables (Alpha Core).No...
Tube pre- or amp: does it matter?
I started with a tube preamp as well. I then moved to a tube amp, but eventually went back to a solid state amp as a result of speaker efficiency. Done right a solid state amp and tube preamp can sound very nice together. In addition to proper imp...
Good sources for tubes other than Upscale
Agreed on Upscale. Bought some Mullards from him and they were noisy out of the box. Wouldn't take them back either.
Help search for a phono stage that fits my system
I have a Benz L2 cartridge rated at 0.3mV. I'm using a Hagerman Trumpet (MM only) with a K&K Audio (Lundahl) step-up transformer. The step-up allows for multiple gain and load (you can plug and play resistors freely with no soldering) configur...
Good sources for tubes other than Upscale
Andy at VTS and Brendan at Tubeworld (although he is a bit pricey). Also, Audiogon member Whoppadeedoo has supplied me with some excellent tubes at very reasonable prices.
Anybody familiar with the Tandberg TD 310 Cassette
Get a NAK and be done with it. Everything else is second rate.
Phono Preamp
I'm on the ground floor and have a radio station a block away. I had to move my phono preamp and TT to the floor to get rid of my problem.
CIA D200's Vs. Odyssey Stratos Extreme Monos ?
I need to send my amp off for some additional mods that I want to have done. In the process, I was going to get the Odyssey amp so that I could audition it and listen to music while my amp is away. Trouble is, the more I look into these amps and t...
solidstate system to single ended...should I?
While I don't have any experience going from solid state to SET, I can tell you I looked very closely at getting into SET and came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth trading out my speakers (Spendor 1/2e) so I went in a different direction (th...
Wanted:Warm, Sweet preamp.
Then of my original suggestions I'd recommend the Joule LA-100 MkIII. Warmer than the LA-150 IMO.
Phase Inversion in Preamplifer?
Then a test CD that uses a voice to do phase testing seems to be flawed. Something like the Rives CD where piano and bass are used would be more accurate. Correct? On that CD the bass was fine in both tests. However, I think Larryi may still be on...
Anybody familiar with the Tandberg TD 310 Cassette
I have a Tandberg 440A, I think that is a better choice in terms of quality and reliability. However, IMO NAKs are hard to beat. I have had several and still own a 550, 480, and 680ZX.
Phase Inversion in Preamplifer?
Autio, re-reading my post I did not make myslef clear. Swapping the speaker leads at the amp binding posts (+ to - on each channel) I could hear no difference, meaning the voice on the test CD stayed centered and was well imaged. However, with the...
Phase Inversion in Preamplifer?
Sugarbie - you're correct about phase inversion and polarity. In my case, while it is called a polarity switch on my phonostage, the manufacturer suggests it is used to invert phase.
