My favorite Steely Dan song has to be...
"My Old School". If in an automobile, it'd probably be prudent to pull over before the solo starts..
Help chossing a good speaker. $ 3-5 K
Agree with Dodgealum.. Based on your room size, musical taste and budget I'd try to hear the Harbeths. After many speakers, I bought the M-30's blind, and think I'm finally off the spearker merry-go-round.The Harbeths are great for classical music...
The future of Tubes
I suspected low demand was the cause. Thanks both of you for the clarification (and links)..
Any modification on Ayre C-5Xe last three years?
Welcome Themis.. I've talked to Ayre occasionally and haven't heard of any mods or updates. I'd think Ayre would encourage the upgrade to those of us who've bought one, but you might call them as they're easy to reach. My ONLY small complaint is t...
The Rite of Spring
Thanks for the interesting insights and recommendations for this great piece. -Mark

BAT VK-32 tube preamp or stay with BAT VK-3ix
Mama-mia this VK-55SE is nice. Still not completely broken in, but as I said elsewhere, I was fearful of trying a tube amp and now I wish I'd done it earlier.. As a newbie I like the fact that there's no biasing to do.I'd never really heard hologr...
Company loyalty- What has been your favorite?
BAT..Just great sounding equipment and exquisite build quality (in my opinion).. and, call me old fashioned, but they answer the phone when you call and have always been polite and helpful.
A spousal revelation ... and a tall order. Help
I asked her to marry me on the day she said--and I quote--"I don't care what it looks like, as long as it sounds good."I'm at a point where I even care what it looks like, but this has made my day. (Please spare me the flames of being sexist, etc. ...
Into 2009; What rules?? Tubes or Solid State
Since I first tried a tube preamp, I'd always been "afraid" to try a tube amp because of heat and problems I read about with tube amps.A few weeks ago I got a new tube amp and wish I'd done it earlier. I went with one (BAT), that I'm hoping is pre...
Running a fan to cool amplifier any ill effects?
John what fan did you finally chose?Does any one know of a rack fan that runs as low as 30db? Some Mfr don't list the specs. Thanks,Mark
Which tubed pre to "flesh out" my mids???
My preference leans toward the euphonic side, but I can't sacrifice much detail or dynamics to get it.In my opinion that describes the Dehavilland Ultra Verve. I thought Dick Olsher's review (google or see at Dehavilland web site) was accurate and...
BAT Vk-51 SE vs Aesthetix Calypso
BillandSol:I forgot to mention that all of my listening with the 51SE was with 6H30-DR supertube. That was the standard tube in the preamp at that time.. As you probably know those are more scarce now.
BAT Vk-51 SE vs Aesthetix Calypso
I had the 51SE then downsized somewhat and had the Calypso, everthing else in the system was the same at the time.I thougth the Calypso was a very nice preamp but not in the same league as the BAT. The BAT was quieter and had more of the dynamics ...
Best and Worst Rock Concert Moments
Procol Harum headlined a concert in the early 70's. Word was they had some bad disagreement with the promoter. The result was they played about a 30 minute set then walked off saying "we don't know any other songs"..(they hadn't played "Whiter Sha...
