Would like an opinion on hooking up PC to audio
Hi Sandra. Your approach obviously works but is not optimum. The problem is that on most computers the headphone out is not a particularly good signal source. It is preferable to get the data out of the computer using USB, Firewire or Ethernet to ...
DACs with FIREWIRE?
Kubla - You asked "i was thinking if i used a hard drive with only firewire then i'd need a dac with firewire. Did i miss a step? Does the dac have to go back into the computer processor first?"The hard drive and the DAC have nothing to do with ea...
Computer-Based Audio Primer
guys - there are only 4-5 drive manufacturers out there - its a very complex, capital intensive operation - not like making cables LOL the easiest way to quiet a drive is to put it in an aluminum enclosure (for heat dissipation) with no fan - voil...
I'm done Really
now that is the thing - Vegasears hit it squarely - the *#**!@* boxes... no end to the merriment they cause - but I'll tell you its a fine way to avoid putting something like a treadmill in the garage LOL
Going over to the Dark Side?
Pitdog - The Waveterminal is powered by the USB bus - so not a whole lot there to run an amplifier section. What is interesting - and may make you feel a bit better - is that all the modded Squeezebox and iPods coming out of RedWine and Bolder hav...
Going over to the Dark Side?
Anything single ended (RCA) is -10. Always been that way. Works fine over reasonable length cable runs such as you are likely to have in a home rig. Balanced outputs (XLRs) run at +4 - its the format that the pro's use for all low level work (mics...

Tobz - if you are going to go to all that trouble, don't use a sound card.
The Law of Diminishing Digital Returns
it has always been true that the search for the last 3db (in this case a metaphor) is the most expensive. the ultimate is the ultimate because, well it costs more then anything else - in theory at least superior engineering and manufacturing suppo...
Going over to the Dark Side?
One last thought - ripping as you have already discovered is something of a PITA. Why not rip Lossless - your first foray into PC based audio is unlikely to be your last - something about the sound quality, the random access etc. Hard drive space ...
DACs with FIREWIRE?

Multiple Monitors, Multimedia and "Convergence"
Hi CW -Way cool. You know there are some places here in Hollywood that cater to the broadcast market and we all make a lot of jokes about where the old edit bay gear goes to die... but at the end of the day it does cost a bit more then just puttin...
Multiple Monitors, Multimedia and "Convergence"
You know, I started in the audio visual/production business too long ago. One thing I have observed is that the PC industry has a habit of reinventing stuff that already works well - one example is using unbalanced minis instead of balanced XLRs, ...
Multiple Monitors, Multimedia and "Convergence"
CW - If you want it now, I suspect a Mac is in your immediate future. So get a new G5 with the high end video card and put two of the 30" displays on it - doesn't get much better till you really spend stupid money... I suggest you mount the monito...
Connecting I-pod to Integrated Amplifiers
Marco -I am a regular 6 Moons reader. I simply chose the other article but I am glad you are exposing people to this one as well. I don't think we disagree about much - but we seem to be coming at this from somewhat different points of view. What I...
Bit perfect digital output from pc
Maybe - for one thing iTunes and iPod are platform agnostic...I am in agreement with you that MP3 sounds like crap on a high end systemThe magic starts after you get past MP3 - which means encoding in Apple Lossless or something of its ilk to get ...
