VAC amps and Focal Grand Utopias at $195k a pair
Amazing. I have no axe to grind with VAC or Focal, but I thought the sound in there was horrible. It sounded like the bass was being cancelled out and all that was left was a gritty midrange. I tried moving around the room because I thought I must...
If she isn't into the gear, is she into the music?
The quality you seek in a partner is that she respects the things you enjoy, whether or not she personally likes them. When the home gets unpleasant, you find yourself home less and less. When you're listening to the hifi, she knows where you are ...
Basis Audio Super Arm 9
Buy one before it goes up again! I'll stick with the Vector for now. Once you get into that amount of money, it's a difficult decision to figure out how to best spend $15K upgrading. New cartridge, new cables, new phono preamp - new speakers? Or t...
NY Audio Show September 26th to September 28th
I'm not sure they were vintage Tannoys. Tannoy still makes a number of those big-cabinet coaxials. Frankly, the sound was a bit muddy and juke-boxy, but still comfortable and better than many of those bright, harsh speakers audiophiles seem so fon...
NY Audio Show September 26th to September 28th
Charles - no, he wasn't using the Horning. He was showing the Verity Audio speakers. I forgot the model, but I think they were $25K, if that helps. I honestly can't remember what amps he was using, but the TT was TW Acustic, of course. Can't remem...
NY Audio Show September 26th to September 28th
Dropped by this morning and it was moderately busy. Some nice things, but most of the sound was boring or just plain bad. Highwater Sound had a very nice room and played tasteful jazz and classical. Jeff Catalano was going on with someone about ho...
The best Standmount Loudspeaker $6k or under
It's funny that you spend 98% of your posts talking about the quality and cost of the parts and maybe 2% talking about the sound. Unfortunately, that's how most of you neurotic audiophile types buy things. I own a pair of Fritz single-driver speak...
should I suspend a floor-standing turntable?
IMO, if the floors are truly bouncy, putting the TT on an end table will not help. It must be wall mounted, which is really no big deal. Try this test - take a half glass of water and put it on the table where you plan to mount the TT. If the wate...
I would love some suggestions on great acoustic...
I still listen to the old Levinson "Elliot Fisk Plays Scarlatti", which is usually available on Ebay. The Sheffield Micheal Newman record is also very nice. Michael Hedges "Arial Boundaries" is good too. He plays electric, but it's very melodic. R...
old high end v. new entry level: audience
Personally, I would go for the used AU24. It is a top-notch product at a reasonable price, especially used. You can always upgrade later, but don't assume the upgrades are actual improvements. The old AU24 cables were very, very good.
Best products for baffle material s ?
Vapor1 - You misinterpreted my post. I am saying that the OP believes that if he builds a heavy enclosure, it will automatically be superior to the one he has now, which he believes vibrates. He may well end up preferring what he has now. I am say...
Cartridge or cable upgrade
About the Herbies Mat - you asked what thickness to get. If your tt has a thin felt mat, get the thinnest one. Herbie will help you with this. I wouldn't normally recommend a mat as a first upgrade, but on my MM5, it was ridiculous how much it hel...
Best products for baffle material s ?
PTSS, I haven't read every post here, but I think your premise, that a less resonant cabinet is better, is simplistic and flawed. Every material, regardless of density and weight, has a resonant frequency. Companies like Spendor and Harbeth, who b...
"New" Beatles Mono Catalog Release on 180gr Vinyl
I had a chance to compare side one of the new Rubber Soul mono release with my Japanese stereo version cut from a digitally remastered copy of the original tape, so it says. While it was a relief to be rid of the distracting hard panning of the st...
Cartridge or cable upgrade
I'm not sure what you're considering would be a really audible improvement over what you have. Personally, I would try a Herbies mat before doing anything. It made a very audible improvement on my old Music Hall (Project) tt, but it seriously degr...
