Good sources for oddball recordings Some good sources for diverse and interesting musical 'stuff' that I've come across:www.dustygroove.comwww.forcedexposure.comwww.anomalousrecords.comwww.cadencebuilding.com/cadence/musicsaleshp.html(and take a look at the site for their in-house l...
Calling all indie rockers... Nicko...I haven't fully digested the new Califone disc, but I can conclusively say that it's another excellent Califone recording. It does see them developing towards an expanded sound. The more melodic aspects of the songwriting are a little more...
halogen lighting? I once had (for a few seconds) one of those cheap 'torchiere' up-lights that use halogen bulbs. The first time I switched it on, not only was a large amount of noise introduced that began spitting out at me through the speakers, a nasty and very l...
Calling all indie rockers... OK...keeping in line with the time period defined and sticking with the theme of 'rock', thus leaving out electronica and some of the more pop-oriented material, here's some pretty great indie stuff of recent years. This is by no means intended to...
Lee Morgan Yes, 'The Sidewinder' is an excellent recording and a legitimate classic. 'Search for the New Land' is an AWESOME performance as well (in particular, the title track). I also enjoy his 'Live at the Lighthouse' recordings from the early '70's.
What's your High End best buy/unknown components? Within my experience, system, etc. ;Densen electronics, Wasatch Cable Works, Tekline power cords, Yamamura Art-Q Dampers
The best and worst "audiophile music" As a general rule, I do not listen to the so-called and much vaunted 'audiophile' recordings, especially in light of my generally esoteric and eclectic musical tastes. That aside, I do appreciate a well-recorded disc and have encountered a few les...
Earplugs for conerts? My ears seem to have a problem with ear-plugs, due to sinus pressure issues probably. They are pain-inducing so I cannot wear them. The expandable ones that you squeeze prior to putting in your ear seem to work pretty well and I can use these. Unf...
Funky/fusion jazz with heavy base emphasis.... I've been running into some fairly great jazz/electronica fusion as of late. If you're inclined to dig into that kind of sound, check out the Tied & Tickled Trio 'Electric Avenue Tapes' or DJ Spooky 'Optometry'. This stuff uses real players, r...
Massive Attack fans.... With regards to Portishead, I am not sure if they are releasing any new material, but Beth Gibbons just released a solo album with 'Rustin Man', who apparently was involved with Talk Talk at some point. It's gettting some pretty good comments from...
What's under YOUR CD player? Nordost pulsar points which rest atop of Yamamura Art-Q Dampers. This has netted very interesting results...sonically speaking. Works OK for me anyway.
The Flaming Lips are Go Manifesto I started getting into these guys right when their 2nd LP, 'Hear It Is' came out around 1986 or so. Some intangible & subtle-yet-pervasive quality of their music really struck a chord with me that lingers to this day. The records were good fun...
What are best phono preamps under $500 ? Monolithic Sound PS-1 is a pretty nice choice. You'd probably want the outboard HC-1 power supply with that though. Still should be able to pick it up in your price range.
1st song you remember??? As a young kid, I do remember owning some oddball novelty records (remember K-tel's "Looney Tunes"...how about the song 'Junk Food Junkie' by --?--)and comic book superhero story records. I did receive a very weird jolt of obtuse nostalgia while c...
