AR-2ax. On the Prowl. Typical Issues??? @elliottbnewcombjr My sound pressure meter came in handy measuring the output of the old tweeter against the new one, compared to the midrange. Old working tweeter was weak. That's the kind of attention to detail that can make or break th...
Articles You Feel Should be Shared @rmndud "Why does this happen? One reason is more trust between purchaser and sellers, meaning more loyalty to brands. Most ads today have more meaning to users as marketers have access to data that allows them to create highly targeted ads. Sec...
Has the cost of HiFi gotten a bit too much? @mahgister First: i know someone of my age that never owned a computer and trust only official TV news... He is so lost about anything that it is impossible to discuss with him about what occur in the world... He cannot BELIEVE anything because...
Can a great system make a mediocre recording sound good? @telemarcer I notice the differences in recordings much more as my system improves. Better systems tend to have wider bandwidth, but mediocre recordings don't, and here lies the problem. Playing back recordings which favour the midrange ie ...
Is it ok to stack LPs horizontally? Everyone seems to store records vertically yet it's far from obvious just why. Is it because the printed label is usually slightly raised, and storing flat would push the edges down eventually causing warping? Is it the same reason people store ...
Can a great system make a mediocre recording sound good? @o_holter "At the same time, my experiment indicates that you don’t need costly speakers to improve the sound. Much can be done with the speakers available. My guess is that many here at Audiogon would re-discover their LP collections (or stream...
The sound quality from DACs - is it all the same? @mahgister If they did spoke about the primacy of acoustic instead of suggesting upgrading multiple times each audiophile would learned to direct his focus on other less costly acoustic solutions than electronic upgrades only ... There is many a...
Every day I see another turntable recommendation... Planar 8 or 10. At the very least you'll have something that can pass for a work of art.
The sound quality from DACs - is it all the same? @khughes The question is, do you want one that *has* a distinct sound of it's own? Or one with the most accurate reproduction? The former will be a form of fixed tone control you may not want if you're an equipment junkie and change components f...
Can a great system make a mediocre recording sound good? @clearthinker Therefore a system could be designed that would process poor recordings to sound like good ones. But the changes made would render the performance different from the original recording. Isn’t this also what modern TVs do? Re-i...
After years of separates, I'm going integrated. Anyone else do the same? I went from a Naim pre/power to a Creek integrated. No regrets. In fact the Creek is actually more powerful than the Naim was (not that I ever get to go past halfway on the volume knob). Plus it's nice to have a remote control.
The sound quality from DACs - is it all the same? @jackhifiguy It's a valid question and I'm a little disappointed to see such hostility and defensiveness expressed in some of the responses. It's a fact that DACs use different components, especially processing chips, but is it also a fact that...
Can a great system make a mediocre recording sound good? @knotscott The best you can hope for is for the system and any given recording to sound like it did when it took place...good, bad, or indifferent. I agree. Otherwise you’d need to dial in different EQ choices for diff...
Why Do So Many Audiophiles Reject Blind Testing Of Audio Components? @astolfor "...his father almost gave him a spank and asked if I knew or I was being me curious so he told me that short memory key in finding the right lenses, because the short memory comparison is key" Thanks for sharing that interesting p...
The Law of Accelerating Returns @widmerpool j "The marketing of luxury goods has a common thread in that the high cost of the item is actually a feature of the product. Exclusivity is a selling point." This, a million times over. And, the fact that others know how mu... |
