What defines mid-fi versus high-end?
Sales terms like 'mid-fi' and 'high-end' can only refer to price and profit margins and the boutique paraphernalia that comes with it. These terms were created by those who sell and promote equipment. For the rest of us, it's mainly performance...
I don't want to beat a dead horse but I'm bugged.
@russ69 Can anybody provide some insight to why some people are stuck on audio measurements?   Because this is the way that the equipment we all love so much has been designed and built for decades and decades now. We can trace this lineage w...
Great Rock Bassists your Top 10.Rock not Jazz. But Hey what about Reggae
The obvious ones for me, or the ones that I actually noticed are: 1 Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions) especially on Get Happy!! 2 Paul McCartney, particularly on Revolver (Good Day Sunshine, Dr Robert etc). and of course 3 Pete...
Is it good to upgrade the crossovers in your speakers?
It's a tricky business no doubt because confirmation bias is a thing. However, I was once asked to solder a friend's Celestion 44 cable connectors where they met the drive units inside the cabinet. The existing tag connectors looked pitted and d...
How do you judge audio components and speakers?
@mahgister  Ignorance in audio thread promoted by  SOME gear or tweaks sellers is there to sell upgrade without end...Customers believe it...   Yes, this is the tried and tested sales method that has caught out many many people. I should know,...
How do you judge audio components and speakers?
@jackhifiguy  I would broadly agree with everything you say, especially the point about some systems being too revealing for certain less than perfect recordings.  The problem wortj bearing in mind is that it's virtually impossible to find anyth...
most beautiful (looking) speakers
@cakyol I have a friend who once saw the B&W Nautilus at a show in the 1990s and has since regarded them as his ultimate loudspeaker. He just loves the design. [He also likes art deco, Tamara de Lempicka and baroque styling - yuk!]. Wherea...
most beautiful (looking) speakers
@grislybutter  Looking at some of the images posted it's quite clear that beauty is indeed often in the eye of the beholder. However, these Celestion SL6s are certainly nice looking speakers. One of the very few that really do look better witho...
Why should audiophile deniers be allowed on an audiophile forum?
@emailists  But in the same way people get the leadership they deserve, I suppose people get the audio forums they deserve.   Didn't want to disagree once more but aren't you making a mistake here in assuming how democracy actually works (compa...

Suggestions for Bluetooth device to hook up iPhone to amp
Try to get something with the more recent Bluetooth 5.1, or 5.0 at the least. The new iFi Zen Air Blue has 5.1 but I'm not certain how it compares to the highly rated Zen Blue 2 which has 5.0.
Harbeth 30.1 or 40.1
@pdreher At the very least Harbeth owners ought to consider the long held opinion of the designer when it comes to amplifiers, stands, cables etc. Thereafter, as you have done, it’s a question of personal choice.
most beautiful (looking) speakers
Wilson Audio Sabrina's. Nice in other colours too, esp orange.
Missing Members
I hope everyone is ok too. These past 2 years have been tragic for far too many people. I doubt whether many of us have not experienced losing someone close to us in that time.
Is it good to upgrade the crossovers in your speakers?
@mapman  It’s only a good idea if you really know what you are doing. Or just want to tinker and maybe learn and see what happens. Otherwise, if you have the right good quality speakers for you to start with, there is no need. The crossover was a...
