Buying used vs new speakers from a technology perspective
Computer aided design might give you a flatter frequency response and better dispersion, as opposed to merely listening by ear, but in reality very little has changed. If things had greatly improved then no one would be listening to old speakers ...
Toilet Paper to Vacuum Tubes
It's often a fine line between planning ahead or lapsing into OCD...
Does carpet deaden the sound too much?
I think you're right. Most recording studios don't have thick carpets and aren't heavily furnished either. Give me an underdamped room rather than an oversampled one any day.
Why Do So Many Audiophiles Reject Blind Testing Of Audio Components?
@reubent @unreceivedogma - the Don’t Worry Be Happy approach to fine listening Ha! Do a search of AudiogoN for "Don’t Worry, Be Happy".You’ll see, it’s also been my philosophy for years. It’s simple, but liberating...     Yes, tweaking y...
Why still USB 2.0?
Similar thing with formatting USB file systems for music etc. I tend to prefer exFat because it outperforms the much older FAT32. Yet FAT32 is the only one that most devices recognise. Oh well, FAT32 seems to do the job well enough! I guess if...
Are there speakers that disappear regardless of the recording?
What a great question! In my experience some speakers 'disappeared' a little more than others. My Tannoy Berkeley's don't disappear at all. OK, they're better with some recordings than others, but I'm guessing a large wooden box made in the 197...
Why Do So Many Audiophiles Reject Blind Testing Of Audio Components?
Blind listening tests are not the ultimate, definitive final answer to which products are better. They're just the best and the most scientific means we have of comparing the sound signatures of different products. It has been long established t...
AR-2ax. On the Prowl. Typical Issues???
Legendary speakers that will become collector's pieces, if they are not already. Good luck in finding a well looked after pair.
Upgrade Cart/Subplatter on Rega Planar 2 or Step up to Clearaudio Concept
Yeah, the wood finishes look good. Adds a little class, if nothing to sound quality. It’s a neat looking deck but I wouldn’t take the all black version.   Cartridges are matter of tone and taste. For example some folks hate the infamous Denon D...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
Political World Bob Dylan We live in a political world Where mercy walks the plank Life is in mirrors Death disappears Up the steps into the nearest bank.     Thankfully music can provide a welcome respite but there's no way of escaping th...
Upgrade Cart/Subplatter on Rega Planar 2 or Step up to Clearaudio Concept
It would seem wiser to upgrade the turntable. With a 4k budget there’s plenty of chose from, including other Regas. For what it’s worth, I recently heard one of the skeletal Rega decks and was pleasantly surprised at how it seemed to sound like ...
What Recordings Of Yours Did Not Age Well?
@jim5559 cd318 , the way I did  it was to  growup . Jazz and classical  are a big help . Cheers   Maybe, maybe not. I don't mind the odd bit of jazz and classical now and then but I'd never want to give up on the sheer visceral thrill, im...
What Recordings Of Yours Did Not Age Well?
@jim5559  "Funny, as i grew up EVERY rock LP turned in to crap!"   Yes, this is the genre that gives me most playback problems. I don't know of it's memory playing tricks or perhaps my Heybrook speakers were much better than I thought, or mayb...
Feel free to talk me off the ledge
@kclone  "Probably what, 75% to 85% of recordings are not "audiophile".  So that leaves us small percentage of stuff that truly sounds out this world on our systems."   This is the great (mostly unspoken) problem with high performance audio. I...
Is Old Music Killing New Music?
I would never blame the young. If we’re going to blame anyone, then let’s blame our unseen publicity shy puppet masters who feverishly operate behind a curtain of anonymity. We’ve had almost 70 years of continuous peace since WW2 and all the whi...
