Distortions that the human ear likes. Are there any ?
Intentional artistic distortion (ie many Beatles recordings from Rubber Soul onwards) = good. That's what the recording artists and their teams wanted. After market distortion (mastering choices done by engineers years later and those defects added...
Distortions that the human ear likes. Are there any ?
@nonoise  interesting stuff.  Yes there does seem to be a prevailing feeling amongst those on the pro side that audiophiles are there to be humoured and tolerated. There there my dear! Whether we like it or not the most important decisions are mad...
cartridge cost/quality/performance
Nothing matters more than tracking performance. Especially that final furlong as you approach the run out groove...Everything else is just a matter of taste.
Leben CS 600 and Harbeth vs Audio Note vs ATC vs JM Reynaud
@pdreher  your post intrigued me as the standard SLH5s are said to be a tad less open than the plus versions. But then again sensitivity to brightness and sibilance does seems to vary from listener to listener. I find that in my case it definitely...
Leben CS 600 and Harbeth vs Audio Note vs ATC vs JM Reynaud
Leben CS600? If the sounds is as half as beautiful as its looks....Said to work well with Harbeths.
Any experience with Tannoy loudspeakers?
@johnrothschild, all the Tannoys I have owned MX3s (slim floorstanders), R3s (bigger floorstanders) and Berkeley’s (larger floor/standmounts) were voiced to sound satisfyingly full at low volume. The vintage Berkeley’s are a dream at low volumes, ...
Any experience with Tannoy loudspeakers?
@atmasphere , like it or not, certain loudspeakers are better than others with certain genres. Some are just plain better full stop. Now don't bother me again, not whilst I'm listening to Queensryche and System of a Down on my beloved ESLs..
Chinese fake cables How fake, how good?
Well, the consumer's attention has never in history been in such voracious demand as today. The sheer number of sites tracking everyone's online activity is bewildering.I guess the consumer has responsibilities too, but at the end of the day we al...
Any experience with Tannoy loudspeakers?
@skoczylas , I’m a big fan too. It sounds like you’ve arrived at one version of the state of the art.I understand that not everyone agrees but I don’t think a better cabinet material for the midrange exists. I just love that organic tactile clarit...
Any experience with Tannoy loudspeakers?
@johnrothschild, each and every Tannoy speaker I have heard R1, MX3, R3, DC6, Berkeley etc had a full sound never too far off neutrality. All of them good all rounders with plenty of Bass warmth. However they would not be my first choice for Rock o...
Chinese fake cables How fake, how good?
Err...half the UK audio industry has moved production out to China without any adverse quality control issues. It's the implementation that counts. We used to hear this crap about Japanese cars until it sank in that they left the British made ones...
Chinese fake cables How fake, how good?
@mikeybc , err sorry for mentioning this, but you realise that even a bone fide Cardas cable will sound the same as 12 gauge, right? Or maybe they're not fakes after all.Why do you think cable manufacturers only gently, very gently IMPLY and SUGGE...
BBC Radio 3: Being Orson
Five radio episodes from 2015 to mark centenary of Welles’ birth. Around 15 minutes each - nothing special or new, though David Thomson’s attempt at psychoanalysis (5: Some Kind of Genius) does make you feel for Orson.Still think he’s wrong about ...
What is proper ratio of money spent on amp/preamp/integrated vs speakers? 1:1?
@tlinkie, yes white  speakers, white background goes down really well. Helps with imagery a bit too.As for this magical ratio, well as @mikapen said sometimes spending more = worse sound. Not all companies are like Harbeth or ATC where spending mo...
Naim anomalies!?
Some of us can still remember the days when Naim (along with Linn) used to proclaim that imagery and tonality didn't really matter and that punch and timing was the thing. I guess that was their USP back in the day. Most of their amp connectors wer...
