how high is the drop test at ups?
Depends, if it is declared as a turntable, UPS will take it to the nearest twenty story building for dropping. Moral: is never ship a turntable, unless you can break it down to little pieces for assembly elsewhere. Pickup for demo and a cash payme...
SACD vs. Redbook and other formats
Other formats? O assume you mean blu ray, which in my experience blows away SACD and Red Book. Still waiting for Miles Blue to come out, promised long ago.
Subwoofer cables
Please, go to monoprice and you will find a cable as good or better then the high price stuff. I've two subs and I have tried $2K cables and down and nothing sound better then the $12.00 from monoprice.
Bang and Olefsun Stereo System
Junk the whole system by selling on Audiogon, less the cd player which is for the trash. Buy more current items, maybe B&O, or Bose.
Acoustic Treatment on rear wall
a single Echo Buster, about 48x4 should do the trick.
Dedicated listening room design
Since you will be using basement space, the key will be to isolate the sound of all the mechanical equipment and its duct work. Hard to do. Until you get that right I would suggest not spending any money building the room itself. Also, read Floyd ...
5+ years old $5k player vs. current $2k player
Get the sony 5400, new, and you are set for another five years.
If your whole system costs $40,000....
Seems you are fooled into thinking $40K will get you a great system. I have experienced system in the $10K range that blew away $100K systems. With the right room, $10K will get you great sound. Talk to Jim Smith before you spend another dime.
Cartridge for a vintage Sansui table/arm
I second the Shure 97, great sound and value. If you search you will find them for $50. Why spend more?
What does it take to qualify as a reviewer?
Being corrupt, as you find that only by getting in bed with manufacturers, get you actually make a living doing such.
Best REEL TO REEL blank tape?
Why put vinyl on tape? Just keep the vinyl and maintain a good turntable. I have few R2R decks together with a large collection of commercially pre-recorded tapes. These tapes sound great, many of which were commercially recorded from vinyl and us...
help with music?
Katie Melua, will set you on a path to more like her, including Nora Jones. Katie's two DVD's are a great way to see and hear her. They are a great value.
Good budget tube amp?
Any Cayin or VAS, used, of course.
Do you buy new equipment because you are bored
I second, definitely a mental problem. Reminds me of the question, 'can you get bored with sex'.
Projector question
Better you look at some of the 70" LCD's, projectors are a hassle. The new 70's run about $4K. A good projector, mount, screen, cabling etc. will run about $6k and need bulbs at 400.
