How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Three things have worked for my audio addiction:1. Finally meeting at least some of my expectations for good audio playback. Yes, I can find things wrong with my system, but on the whole, to my ears, it does more things right than wrong.2. Having ...
Are tone controls worth a second look ?
I use the digital tone controls on my Meridian processor with good results. But I have heard digital tone controls that sound terrible. I guess, like so many things in audio, it's largely a matter of the quality of the implementation.
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
- In your room, with your system, and with your program material, reversal of absolute phase make enough of a difference enough of the time, in the right way, to be perceived as an improvement. This explanation is looking more and more likely. I ho...
Any suggestions on Tube Buffers?
I must agree with the growing consensus on this thread. I would save for a tube preamp. I owned a Musical Fidelity X10v3 tube buffer, with the external power supply, and although I liked it for a period of time, I ultimately removed it from the sy...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
my assumption was that you removed the woofers and tweeters from your loudspeaker cabinets, reversed the wiring on each of the drivers, and put the speakers back together. Is this correct? No. I'm sorry that wasn't clear from the OP. I have done no...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
Rleff - No test equipment, unfortunately. I'm just a simple audiophile. :)
Shunyata Hydra Vibration Isolation ???
I use Black Diamond Racing pits with good results.
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
Kirkus - What do you think of Al's last post? Can the driver/crossover/cabinet interaction theory explain the improvement I experienced across all recordings, regardless of their absolute polarity?Still confused...
Sub/Speaker Crossover?
I cross over my mains into my sub at 80Hz. I tried everything from 50Hz to 100Hz, and found that 80Hz resulted in the smoothest integration. However, I cannot say that 80Hz would necessarily work best for you, since, after setting up several mains...
External hard drives and sound quality
Mapman and Blindjim are quite correct. There is no sonic drawback to using external hard drives. I use 2 LaCie d2 Quadras connected by firewire 800, with good results. Haven't tried a wireless hard drive, so I can't advise about that. Good luck.
Small Speakers for Small Room, Close to Back Wall?
How about the Dynaudio Focus 110? They are close to the size you mentioned, and they include a foam plug to block the port, for use close to the rear wall. I personally own the slightly larger Dynaudio Focus 140, and I am quite pleased with them.Y...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
If you were to reverse the speaker connections, that ENTIRE waveform (including the initially negative-going tweeter output and the initially positive-going woofer output) would be inverted.Ahhh! Now I get it, Al. The sentence above is what made i...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
Jea48 - No, the two speakers are in phase with each other. And no, the woofer does not produce less bass. I believe you are confusing the following:(1) The ABSOLUTE polarity of a recording - positive or negative.(2) The RELATIVE polarity of a comp...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
Onhwy61 - No, my room does not have many highly reflective surfaces. It has a thick rug over a wood floor and 2" acoustical foam over a large area on the ceiling. Both side walls and the wall behind the speakers contain diffusion. Also, the room i...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
Another thought: I wonder if it has something to do with how the sound from the tweeter and woofer "sums" at a particular listening distance.
