Help me find violin and cello related
James Ehnes, Bach sonatas and partitas for solo violin. This is a rare example of top notch playing and top notch recording. It is not mic'ed too close. Ehnes does not sound like he is jumping around all over the room, as one hears when the solois...
Sony SCD XA5400ES tube rolling?
I enjoyed the review also. You can buy the Sophia tubes directly from Sophia. The NOS Mullards are getting pretty hard to find and pretty expensive. E-bay is an option for those. The listings there now are kind of disappointing.
Sony SCD XA5400ES tube rolling?
If you read the posts carefully you will see that the Mullards and Sophias were recommended by Dan Wright. This is not a case of second guessing the modder. It is a case of taking his recommendation on cost no object tubes. I am thoroughly impress...
Sony SCD XA5400ES tube rolling?
If you like what you hear now, wait until it burns in. I've got ~ 400 hrs now, and the thing has really sweetened up very nicely. I'm still using the stock tubes, but soon i am going to give the Sophia's a try. They came highly recommended from so...
Why no reviews of the Magnepan 3.7 in Stereophile
Elizabeth, well now, that seems a little off, don't you think? What is to stop someone else from buying a pair and running the measurements? Not to mention reverse engineering. Somebody is blowing smoke here. Diller has to know this would make Val...
Advice for first pair of Maggies
Stickman's advice on placement is correct. The 1.6's are going to be hit or miss depending on placement on the lowest note from a double bass (42 hz). My 1.6's are out about 4.5 ft and do pretty well. I get bass you can feel, but it won't knock yo...
Advice for first pair of Maggies
The room may be a bit on the small side for the 1.6's. It may take some effort, but you should be able to make them work. 3' out should be OK, but you will probably want some window treatments to prevent reflection off of the glass. The smaller sp...
Advice for first pair of Maggies
You might want to post some details on your music room. You will do well to select a model that fits the room well. As far as buying used, the older models have had problems with the glue failing after varying amounts of time. Direct sunlight and ...
Upgrading from Rega Apollo
Ricred,The way it works with Modwright is that you buy a player and send it to them for modification. So, you make a $3.5K investment more or less on blind faith. I bought my Sony about a year ago, and thought long and hard before I pulled the tri...
Upgrading from Rega Apollo
In that price range I would suggest you strongly consider the Modwright Sony 5400. I got mine back about 2-3 weeks ago and I now have about 120 hours on it, so it is still burning in. Dan tells me to expect continued improvement even into the 400-...
Magnepan 1.7 too bright, HELP
There is a lot of good advice and good ideas here. The take home message is that most of what you have may not be the best match with the 1.7's. I'm with Macdadtexas on the importance of good clean power. I use CAD 500 MB's with my Maggies. Unfort...
Magnepan 1.7 too bright, HELP
I use anticables with my 1.6QRs. They are not bright at all. I'm guessing it is the room. Treat the corners behind the speakers. It may also be the dennon.
Cary MB500, McIntosh MC501, or Pass X350
For what it's worth, I've heard the Macs with the B&Ws, using a Cary 306pro as source and did not like the combo. However, I'm not fond of B&Ws, so I'm not sure that is much help to you. I have the Cary's and the Sony with 1.6QR Maggies. B...
Speaker cable recommendation McCormack/Maggie
I have used McCormack DNA- deluxe monos with MG1.6QRs. I don't have the unusual RFI problem you have, but I do have a couple thoughts. If I read your post right, in your former location with a given set of equipment, you had neither sibilance nor ...
Signal Cable
I've bought all kinds of stuff from Signal. Power, digital, speaker, IC's. I like it all. I have a slight preference for Anti-Cables for my Maggies vs Signal Silver. I did not try Franks copper cables, so I don't know how they might have worked. F...
