System upgrade advice
You might want to try a 'tube buffer'. Musical Fidelity makes an inexpensive one that has helped a lot of systems tone down the upper octaves.
Importance of Amplifier versus Preamp?
My angle on this is that any quality combination of preamp and amp can potentially sound good if the 'tweaking' is performed with patience and perseverance. I believe we are in the 'golden age' of tweaking with so many solid choices.I will even go...
Audiophile Fakery
Well, it helps to have all these magazines/reviewers inspecting and judging the merits of a wide range of products. I think the biggest deception, however, comes in how components are bundled together by audio/video stores who have sales reps with...
Please help a rookie –used amps for magnepan 3.7?
You have to double the amount of power for every 3db increase in volume. 3db is a common click on the volume knob for many preamps. This means to get another 'click' worth of volume you have to go from say ...10 watts to 20 watts, 20 watts to 40 w...
Please help a rookie –used amps for magnepan 3.7?
Magnepan and Audio Research have been 'soul mates' for years. Since you already have ARC equipment, just find a less expensive used ARC amp. There are lots to choose from which meet your criteria and are in your budget. Also, remember that the act...
What full range floor standers would be good
If you have the room, Dunlavy SC-4(s) or SC-5(s) are as good a used bargain as there is in high-end audio.
Is EAD still relevant
I have an EAD Ultradisc 2000 in one of my systems and I am quite enamored with it. In fact, I spent a considerable amount of time comparing it to a Sony SACD that was given an A+ rating by Stereophile Magazine at the time. The Sony unit was good, ...
Recommendations on Christmas Music??
Zd542...no apology, just the recognition that not all people celebrate the Holidays as my family and I do. Personally, I look forward to the Christmas Season more than any other time of the year and am truly thankful for all the wonderful music th...
Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-IV
I picked up a pair of the SC-IVs a couple of years ago for $2,500.00 which were not only functionally perfect but also without any visual flaws. I passed on a couple of lower priced sets that were around $2K. I've always felt that if gear looks li...
The most holographic Power Cord
I love cables that have a 'light and airy' quality without sacrificing base weight and authority. Audio Magic cables have gotten it done for my applications.
Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-IV
I have almost every model speaker that John Dunlavy designed in his illustrious (albeit short) career. I have gone to lots of high-end shows and been invited to countless shop demos. There's a tremendous amount of amazing gear in the marketplace t...
Stereo power amp for $10k
There's just no sense in spending $10K in this set-up. If the Marantz unit MUST stay then why not match it to a Marantz power amp at about the same price point. Use the difference for some of the really sophisticated new tweaks that can radically ...
This might just be the end of brick and mortar
Bifwynne...Audio Shows open to the public is having a huge impact on the market. Yes, there is a lot of equipment sold at the shows, but more than that it allows audiophiles to hear/experience many different options and go home and order the equip...
This might just be the end of brick and mortar
No, I don't think so. I would speculate, however, that if it wasn't for Home Theater being the big hitter, high-end two channel would not be enough to keep the doors open at many shops.
Inexpensive tube amp
Look on E-Bay for 'tube amp' and you'll find a number of items in your price range. Most are Chinese imports, but my limited experience with these types of products is that most sound pretty good as long as they are not pushed too hard.
