Hello James Sheyser!  For pity' sake, replace those caps with something much better. Use a Mundorf KPF. They are rated at 250 volts and will larger that what they are replacing. Be sure the "mfd" number is the same as those you are replacing. The ...

Hello Sturdy  Are you a handy guy? Build the Akitika preamp kit and enjoy a very fine sound indeed. I've got a used Marantz 7T. It's available.
Stratospheric audio gear prices
Hi ericrt.  To be fair, it does cost something to develop a product. The lab lights must be lit, the soldering irons heated, etc. Then you have to market the thing, and polish it, and QC it, and pack it, and ship it. Insure it maybe? That money ha...
Preamp tubes in power amps
The Telefunken 12AX7 is really superb as the front end input tube. It lights up very brightly when it is powered on and scares the heck out of you; but it sounds amazing.
Why don't more recordings have soundstage outside of speakers
If you get a very wide soundstage with some recordings, you know your system can do it. We are all at the mercy of the recording engineers. Most recordings are just so-so.  Happy Listening!
Has Anyone Ever Run TWO Identical Pairs of Speakers ?
Hello  vinyl_rules.  If your speakers are smaller, non floor standers its certainly worth a try. I used to run two or four pair of the smaller Advent speakers. If you have serious $3k or more floorstanders, it may not be much of an improvement. Ha...
Help choosing an power amplifier
Hello edwincruz!  Look into the Starke AD4.320. It's a four channel class D amp as good as the Purifi modules used in the NAD33 and now the M298 that are getting rave reviews. I have two Purifi EVAL1 packages (two power amp modules with a Purifi f...
Best Bang for your Buck DAC ?
Hello Again, ngiordano!  I just took delivery of the Pro-Ject  Pre Box S2 Digital and it beats my SMSL M500 by a significant margin. It's getting blown out by several on-line outfits for $400. It came out in 2017 and has gotten good reviews consis...

Japanese Audio
Hello bjesien.  I hope you have noticed that no one has pointed out that Japanese music is played with plucked string and flute like instruments. It is not loud and has lots of "character" in the sound of the instruments. Reproducing such music re...
4 amplifiers to drive 1 pair of speakers?
Hello the greenman! You're thinking creatively and that's good. My own system uses eight channels of amplifier for a pair of four way speakers. Each speaker has it's own amp - but - I use an electronic crossover, so each speaker (tweeter, upper mi...
Why not more popular?
Hello jaytor! Open baffle speakers are harder to place properly in a room than "boxed" speakers. My big system features the Linkwitz LX521-4 speakers: open baffle, 4 way, one amp for each "way" (eleven channels total - a 5.0 setup) and it's wonder...
Can someone please explain
When you listen to your playing music, you (rather obviously) are hearing everything working together - the sum total of what your equipment does to the the sound of the recording being played. One earlier commenter was completely correct: we are ...
Phono Stage, Cartridge, DeGritter...which one first?
Clean the records! Be sure your cartridge is aligned properly in the arm and that the bearings are super free. Check the anti-skate so that the cantilever stays centered when the record is playing. I had a friend whose alignment was so bad he thou...
Run length
If your sub is 4 Ohms, the wire is more of a factor that if it's 8 ohms. You might consider 12 gauge wire. I use 14 gauge solid (twisted) for very long auditorium runs with no problems. There is flat, 50 conductor computer cable on the surplus mar...
