Redbook layer on SACD - good enough? No. How could it? But it's likely that the mastering is different on the different disks--and there's no guarantee that the best version (or, rather, the one you would like best) is on one or the other. If both the CD and athe redbook layer of the...
"Redbook CD's" ?? Redundant, that's what. "Redbook" is the set of standards (there really was a red book) governing the CD format.
equal cable length? Stop fretting. Unequal cables do not matter (within reason), and coiling speaker cables doesn't matter either.
Starting a classical library is BMG an answer? Because many of the Japanese CDs were remastered (and often quite well). BMG was using the same master that was used in the initial release.
Starting a classical library is BMG an answer? Abex: Thanks for that post. Key point: It would cost BMG *extra* to make the CDs worse.
SACD Opinions: Gimmick? Like it? Don't? Why? It depends, more than anything else, on the quality of the remastering job. Some of them have been great, and if you want to hear the best versions of some classic recordings, you've got to have an SACD player.
Starting a classical library is BMG an answer? Don't worry about the manufacturing quality--that's a non-issue. If you can stand all the mailings, a mail-order club is a great way to get your feet wet. (I started my classical record collection with Musical Heritage Society 20-odd years ago.) A...
Where to start? New to Analog The Dual 506 was a fine little budget turntable--decades ago, when it was new. I have a friend who owns one, and it still runs fine. But $200CDN? You gotta be kidding me.'Tables are mechanical devices, and mechanical devices wear out. Doesn't mean...
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse.... Thank you, Sean, for totally misrepresenting what I said and what I believe.
Stereophile confirms new gear is getting worse.... Maybe it's time to admit that many audiophiles do not WANT accurate, high-fidelity gear. Accuracy is boring, not to mention dirt-cheap. Anybody can put together a decent system with an accurate CD player and amp. The challenge comes in trying to p...
Rate these on order of importance: 1 and 5 should really be tied for first--it's the interaction between the two that makes the sound. Everything else pales by comparison.
When do records damage a stylus I'm sure someone could come up with some extreme counterexample, but in general, records cannot damage styli. In the real, physical world, hard things damage soft things, not vice versa. Don't worry about this.
How to keep my stack of Adcoms cool... Yeah, don't put them inside cabinets. All right, you probably didn't want to hear that, but that's the answer. Fans might help somewhat, if they're positioned in a way that really circulates air over and past the amps. (But if both intake and outf...
stuck in quagmire of speakers, someone pull me out You call that a short list?? :-)How many of them have you actually listened to? I agree with Sean Taylor--that's the only way out of the quagmire.
Best speakers for $500 or less Somebody who's considering Bose is an unlikely candidate for buying used. Among new speakers, I'd start with Paradigm and PSB. They might not be everyone's favorites, but they're doing low-end speakers about as well as anyone, and they're pretty w... |
